Building A New House

I emailed our local council today to see how our council approval was going to which the reply was:
"The application is currently in its final stages of planning assessment but has not yet been completed."
Now I read about planning approval, development approval and what not and I am just wondering what process/steps it goes through before it is fully approved to go ahead so I can ascertain where we are up to. I have absolutely no idea!

Mu understanding is Fairmont applies for planning approval first. Hopefully this is what the council is in the final stages of assessing. Once the council gives planning approval it then goes back to the builder who sends it to a surveyor for building approval. This should take about two weeks. It then goes back to council for a rubber stamp issuing building approval which should take about a week. Then you are all set from council perspective to build
