Browse Forums Building A New House Re: gas or electric oven? 2Jun 03, 2013 11:34 am I am not even sure you can get gas ovens anymore? My mum has just got a new one and she had no luck in finding one except for the old style free standing. Onto the question though. When it comes to stoves I am pro gas all the way as electric takes forever to heat up and much less control over the heat. In ovens I used to hate electric ovens but they have come along way. Our rental was a brand new house and had an electric oven and it worked as well as a gas oven. Building the Leabrook with Fairmont Homes in Mallala, SA. Gas ovens are difficult to find many of these days because there are issues with people burning themselves or gassing themselves accidently but those incidences aren't common and they make better cakes (more moist). Gas ovens are usually more expensive to buy and you'll be limited more in choice. I definitely prefer a gas oven so I'm toying with the idea of having one gas oven and one electric oven. I think they're better at 'crispy' and can be more delicate with temperature changes but that can go out the window if you get a crappy one and then you only get on or off. I haven't had any issues with the electric ovens I've owned/lived with. They have performed just as well as the gas ovens. Gas for the cooktop/stove, if you can't get induction (induction's easier to clean than gas & heats-up as quickly - but costs more). Re: gas or electric oven? 6Jun 03, 2013 1:05 pm I grew up with electric but have had gas ovens in my three homes since leaving my parents place and I have to say I LOVE the gas ones. So easy to cook everything, even picky fiddly dishes, whereas I always had trouble with the electric (the pavlova would burn or the cake would be lopsided, etc etc). I know you can buy gas wall ovens but they're few and far between, and I think only westinghouse make freestanding ones now? They are around though, you'll just have to look hard for them. - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. Built in 2013. Our thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=67954 Re: gas or electric oven? 7Jun 03, 2013 1:17 pm I would definetely go gas hotplates, but as for the oven I'm an electric fan. My understanding is that because the electric ones are fan forced, the heat is distributed more evenly than a Gas oven. Although I have not used a gas oven in quite some time, so maybe they are better now than they used to be?
