Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 01, 2013 9:20 am We are looking at carpet for our new build. I had decided on a 100% wool carpet until a salesman yesterday told me anyone that has had wool carpet would not buy it again because it gets eaten by wool moths. Any feedback particularly from people with wool carpet would be very welcome. Thanks
Re: Wool or Acrylic Carpet? 2Jun 01, 2013 11:22 am +1 for this thread. We have to chose carpet soonish. So much research so little time. Thank god for homone forum. Re: Wool or Acrylic Carpet? 4Jun 01, 2013 9:31 pm We just selected our carpet last weekend. Went in with one idea, bought something completely different. A new carpet from America only available through H Norman, called Smart Strand. I can tell you I've never felt any carpet so soft/thick! After sampling this carpet, I couldn't go for anything else. Worth checking out: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/smartstr ... oring.html My Hamptons build (completed): viewtopic.php?f=31&t=63370 Moved in Wednesday 11th Dec 2013 Front landscaping completed June 2016 Re: Wool or Acrylic Carpet? 5Jun 01, 2013 9:42 pm I've always had 100% wool carpet.... I love the feel under foot... However, when we built I also fell in love with a smart strand fibre.... Godfrey Hirst Ecofresh.... We got the one with 25 year warranty. It is a stain and odour resistant carpet. I love how it feels underfoot. We have just moved in and I can honestly say we love it. Re: Wool or Acrylic Carpet? 6Jun 01, 2013 10:19 pm We're just going with cheap polypropylene carpet from Bunnings, with a very tight level loop. It looks perfect for cleaning, wear and stain resistance, and is dirt cheap. We don't go around the house bare-footed (my wife would kill me if I even stepped on the floor without slippers), so the feel wasn't really an issue. The main thing was getting the shortest, tightest possible loop pile to avoid dirt getting trapped in the carpet. I think carpet is one of the more personalised parts of interior design. I can't imagine having a long, cut-pile carpet... the thought of dirt being trapped in the pile, and the tracking and footmarking would drive me mad. Others wouldn't want anything else. However, the whole "wool moth" issue is new to me. A Google search says that they can be prevented by "regular vacuuming" and by "cleaning up stains immediately", which seems like good general advice for any carpet. Re: Wool or Acrylic Carpet? 7Jun 01, 2013 10:46 pm I had my heart set on wool carpet, however, every carpet 'expert' I spoke to advised me against it as I have an asthmatic son. I have bought top quality solution dyed nylon and I'm sure it will be lovely! It's stain and odour resistant, perfect for my little ones! Re: Wool or Acrylic Carpet? 8Jun 02, 2013 12:15 am I have seen moth damage to a wool carpet... in a 100 year old house with 30-40 year old carpet that hadn't been vacuumed in half that time. That room also had dampness issues. New house? New wool carpet? Reasonably regular cleaning with a modern vacuum? No old boxes from great-aunt Phyllis the hoarder with old wool blankets busily breeding up a moth colony? I doubt that you need worry about it! For myself, I plan on a 100% wool carpet. Had them - and the various common alternatives in the past. I have looked at smartstrand (and it is impressive alright) but I like wool. Manmade fibres, however soft, don't feel the same. Blog: http://jyndeira.net/blog/ Re: Wool or Acrylic Carpet? 9Jun 02, 2013 12:41 am I once saw a documentary on wool moths, might have been one of those David Attenborough specials or something. These were a clan of wool moths in the mountains and they favored goat wool. They ate the whole goat , wool and all. I immediately searched the house , none in the master , none in the theater , but then I found a big one in the guest room, using Ms Echo's weight set. I chased it out the back door and it took off down the side of the house. I thought the locked gate would foil it, but it hurdled it no dramas. I rounded it up again in the driveway, we battled in the street. I thought it would be no match for me and my ninja sword, but alas it broke free and ran into the park. Beware those of you in my neighborhood. It may now have a grudge on humans , not just the wool we walk upon Wool moths my as* Reasons not to buy wool: Budget Allergies Asthma Too many rabid pets Too many children Investment property only ( tho some of those synthetics can still be pricey ) No decent vacuum or no power to run it. All/none off the above Others ( make up your own If I have forgotten your reason ) Enjoy shopping for carpet people, but beware the moths in your wallet/purse. They have a thirst for blood and/or cash. Or perhaps that's just Ms Echo. I am an asthmatic with allergies and have never noticed an difference in my condition between carpets. Its more about how clean you keep your home. Also the wool moth thing, I think they are having you on. Sure they exist but I have never ever seen one. At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference and budget. Goodluck with your choice Re: Wool or Acrylic Carpet? 11Jun 02, 2013 2:08 am I lived in a shared house once with wool carpet. One of the guys that lived there had a cabinet sitting on the floor. When he moved out after a year and removed the cabinet, the carpet underneath had all been eaten and there was a swarm of larvae wriggling around where the cabinet had been. Completely gross. That being said, old house, old carpet, uni students, and he lived like a pig. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. Re: Wool or Acrylic Carpet? 12Jun 02, 2013 7:05 am We are going with solution dyed nylon. Bullet proof and with the amount of carpet we need, the price is not too offensive Modified Fernside 38 Rawson Homes Blog: http://www.thehousethatmatandjenbuilt.blogspot.com Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60501 Re: Wool or Synthetic Carpet? 13Jun 02, 2013 9:33 am Oops - sorry about the acrylic/synthetic mix up. Living and breathing kitchens, bathrooms....at the moment before I started carpets on Friday . I had not heard of moths either but the salesperson has worked at the very well known carpet retail store for 18 years. He said they like the dark so start under furniture , beds where it is harder to vacuum. Tried to do a little on line research and have read where they have been a huge problem in the UK. Couldn't find any information from Australia so thought I would check on this site. Good to hear from Charnley that you would buy it again. Thanks all for the input. Re: Wool or Synthetic Carpet? 14Jun 02, 2013 10:03 am I have a mix of both. 80% wool, 20% acrylic. 3 out of 4 people in my home are asthmatics/allergy sufferers and we don't have an issue at all. In fact , we are healthier now living in a new house than we were in our old 1960's house. I would much prefer to have a natural product in my home than an artificial one I'm not a fan of the feel of nylon carpet under bare feet...at actually makes my feet feel itchy...and I don't like the static it can produce with certain shoes!! I may have spent a small fortune on my Brintons woven carpet, but I plan on it still looking the same in 30 years time as the day it was laid. REGULAR vacuuming with a good quality vac is essential with any carpet. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!!
