Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 26, 2008 5:50 pm Hi all
Should you be able to smell the sewage from the breather pipe of the house when I stand outside. My sinks toilets, baths, showers, basins etc are not in as yet but I would have thought this smell would not be around as I have not smelt it in other houses under consturction. Should I be concerned Re: Breather Pipe sewage smell 2Apr 26, 2008 8:32 pm Could it be that some rainwater has gotten into the drainage and has stagnated....may clear up once they complete plumbing and flush the system???
Mention it to the super...make him know you're watching...it's best if site super's are paranoid.... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Breather Pipe sewage smell 3Apr 27, 2008 6:44 pm If the toilets are not in then you will get a smell.
The smell is stopped by the water trap under your sink, basins and showers but is actually part of the toilet. If they are not installed then you will also get a smell. On our jobs we often tape up these holes until the fixtures are installed as it can be enough to knock you out - especially in a small ensuite! If you stick your nose on the vent (breather?) pipe on any house then you will get a pong and probably fall off the ladder (because they are usually on the roof). If you are up there sniffing then please, for your own health - stop! The vent is there for that specific reason - to vent the system to the atmosphere so that every time you flush, you don't suck the water traps out of all your fixtures. Hope that makes sense? Man, no wonder you recommend not sniffing it... Quote: Builders are people too.... Hope there wasn't anything in my response that suggested otherwise.... ....sorry if there was. Yes it has been a while since I have been to this forum and no, I don't have a dog....no fences etc makes it really hard! Quote: The smell is stopped by the water trap under your sink, basins and showers but is actually part of the toilet This is a bit confusing - sounds like the smell is part of the toilet. What I meant was that the water trap is built into the toilet pan itself so you don't necessarily see it, whereas if you look under your sink you will see the 'S' bend water trap made of plastic. The water trap keeps the pong out and the pong is the smell of the entire sewer system that is wafting up your sewer pipes and into your home. Hope that is a bit clearer! Builders are people too....
