Do you think that the bricks you choose/have chosen have a big influence on how you see/like your house?
Or is it not really a concern at all to you?

Or is it not really a concern at all to you? Re: Bricks... 2Apr 26, 2008 11:14 am I think the colour of bricks (and roof) have such a big influence on the appearance of the house, so unless the house is going to be fully rendered, I'm sure this is something most people choose carefully, I cannot imagine anyone being unconcerned about this. (unless its an investment property, perhaps)
Very interesting when you see 2 houses of the same floor plan and how different they look in different brick/roof colour combinations. However, having said this, we were quite happy to choose from the 'builders range' and are happy with our standard PGH bricks, and colourbond roof which was also standard with our builder. Re: Bricks... 3Apr 27, 2008 1:11 am Well for us apart from choosing a builder / floor plan etc, I'd say it was the next biggest choice.
In the end we went with the florentine limestone (2c size from Midland Brick). We had a choice of builders range from either Midland or Austral, but we didn't really fancy the red's that much, and well cream is cream isn't it or maybe not? With 2c hopefully it means they will build a bit quicker ![]() I think it's important to see them in person and see some examples of them in a built house too (don't ya love driving around the new housing estates!). Although I don't think you can go too wrong, sure if it looks different to what you expect then you may be annoyed for a bit, but stare at it long enough & you get used to it and maybe even learn to love it. I do agree though that bricks and external features can certainly make a house look entirely different! Brick laying quality and all that is probably a different story though ![]() Re: Bricks... 4Apr 27, 2008 9:31 am For us, choosing bricks, and roof tiles for that matter, was easy.
What was featured in the display house was 'good enough.' Geoff - Decophile. Re: Bricks... 5Apr 27, 2008 12:25 pm When we were first deciding I was of the opinion that bricks were not important, but after some wise recommendations from members of this site I grew to the opinion that bricks (colour and profile) were vital.
I was going to pick a standard brick to avoid an extra cost, but after finding a brick we both really liked and seeing it on several houses we decided that it was well worth the extra cost to upgrade as it changes the whole outside colour scheme. Or is it not really a concern at all to you? Short answer .. yes. Same with the colour render. It can make or break the look of a house. Re: Bricks... 7Apr 27, 2008 4:43 pm I agree with DeeElle.
The facade, the colour of the bricks and mortar, render and roof tiles are all important because these will either make or break the look of a house. I also think that the colour of the bricks would depend on the facade of a house. There are some colours that would suit modern houses, and some would look better for traditional-looking houses. Because we are after a certain look, we upgraded our bricks, mortar colour and roof tiles. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Bricks... 8Apr 27, 2008 5:26 pm The problem I have is that I do not like any of the bricks on offer here. We (the builder) are going through Midland brick and basically the colour choices are red/red variations and cream/cream variations...driving around the estate (that we are building in) to me is depressing, all the houses now are basically all cream 2c or cream with render, mostly the grey tones. I would like to be different and choose a nice flat dk brown brick that I have seen through other states brick ranges, (stupid me for looking ![]() At the moment I am just hoping that the bricks are not going to make me dislike the house, but from the responses I am getting, it is looking that way! Re: Bricks... 9Apr 27, 2008 5:43 pm I'm sorry to hear that.
It must be frustrating for you not to be given the option to upgrade your bricks. We are fortunate that we have a good range of bricks to choose from. Before we ended up with M, we dealt with different builders and some of them offer limited choices. Because of that, we decided to look for another builder. Why not have a look first at other builders... if you've seen almost all plans and display homes available in your area (and nearby areas), then decide based on that. It is really up to you. In our case, we really went for the builder that offers all the finishes that we want. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Bricks... 10Apr 27, 2008 5:58 pm ![]() My DH doesn't really care about the bricks, as long as its not red! At the moment I am just hoping that the bricks are not going to make me dislike the house, but from the responses I am getting, it is looking that way! Well I guess that leaves you with cream which is fine if you like cream. Is it possible to upgrade the front to a render and then you can add some colour that you like on the front. I've seen lots of houses done like this and it can look pretty good. Have a look at Nics blog. Although her house bricks are not cream she has added render to the front elevation and it looks great. Re: Bricks... 11Apr 27, 2008 6:15 pm ![]() Why not have a look first at other builders... if you've seen almost all plans and display homes available in your area (and nearby areas), then decide based on that. We have and for what we want, in terms of space/rooms etc, this is the only house we can afford. The only other company we can go through is a budget company (mainly for 1st home owners, basic 4 bed 2 bath, which is nearly what we have now and its too small). Even if we found another house plan with everything we want, it is over the $200k mark for standard inclusions let alone upgrades, we really have no choice but to stay with this builder. DeeElle: I wanted to avoid render if possible, as the builders use internal bricks instead of external bricks, and we arent sure of maintenance and or cracking issues etc. With our design we can possibly get render on part of the front, not all of it, but the colours I like are not what DH likes, and it has to match the rest of the house/roof and I am not good with colour matching, DH is no help there as well! Re: Bricks... 13Jun 24, 2008 7:47 pm We are also a bit stuck looking for bricks. Every house in our street is cream brick or cream render with a dark roof. Although we were both initially drawn to cream brick, we were thinking about maybe going with a red for something different. I like the Mallee in the Midland range, but am yet to see a house built out of it!
2 weeks until prestart and we haven't even picked our brick! ![]() Re: Bricks... 14Jun 24, 2008 10:43 pm Matrix we had the same dilemma for a while. I was really keen to have a brick with a bit of colour to it and DH was keen to have something light coloured. I really wanted something that was more of a rammed earth colouring. We checked out the Homebase centre in Perth ( subi) and also went to the Midland brick display and the Austal Brick displays in Bunbury. The Midland brick one also has all the colorbond roofing options displayed there.
In the end the only thing DH and I could agree on was that we didn't want a completely smooth cut type brick. We also decided we couldn't afford to upgrade our bricks. DH got his choice of brick, a standard size cream brick( I'll live with it) that had wriggly sections removed which add a shadowing effect. He almost changed his mind at the last minute to another brick with a bit more colour but then backed out again. ( sigh) I insisted we have raked mortar to add further shadowing to the brickwork. I'm not too keen on yellowy-cream bricks but we've ended up with the best of the choices available and I've decided to focus on the aspects of it I like. Re: Bricks... 15Jun 24, 2008 11:27 pm Selecting bricks was hugely important in the overall feel of our house. I had to be sure I chose something I was completely happy with, as it's one of the things you cannot change later down the track (other than rendering). I know if I had just chosen anything and not completely loved them, I would regret my choice everytime I see them!! (...but maybe that's just me!)
Unfortunately, the bricks I've chosen mean a $7000 upgrade ![]() ![]() ![]() Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Our estate has restrictions on external colours. They must be tuscan colours. Roof must be moroon, red, orange or some browns. Brick colours are also limited.
I didn't want a dark moroon roof and didn't want an orange roof. I think everybody is aware of how I feel about brown. ![]() From there that left few brick choices that would go with the roof. I like light bricks and luckily there was one with terracoota hearts thru some bricks and black specks. I knew I wanted black windows so it all came together. Upgrades? Not a cent. All category 1. If there had been no restrictions? I would have gone for a charcoal roof and a category 5 ![]() Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Bricks... 17Jun 25, 2008 12:09 am We had the same deal, 3 red, 3 cream and we couldn't afford to upgrade. A lot of the houses in our area are cream, so we went with red to be different, with a light coloured roof. I'm glad I did, as our house stands out now and is different. It was an Austral brick, Leonora, red with brown & black thru. it and Midland brick have a similar brick. If hubby doesn't like red, then it looks like cream! Luckily cream goes with anything and can be painted down the track for a different look. The house behind us went with cream bricks and then they painted them a browny, beige colour - looks very impressive. Still everyone has there own taste! Hope you settle on something you both like and in the end with a garden etc. I'm sure it will look great!!
Kaye. Re: Bricks... 18Jun 25, 2008 7:38 pm Our 6 brick colours from midland brick are: *milano *cameo *limestone hue *russet red *burnished red and *restoration red
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y89/jericoholicau/bricks.jpg These colours are taken from the website, and look a bit different in real life. We have chosen the burnished red, they dont look as nice as the picture and the 'cream' grout that we seen had a lot more yellow in it, not anything like the photo above at all. Not really happy, but nothing we can do. Re: Bricks... 19Jun 25, 2008 8:45 pm We're allowed to use anything from the Midland or Austral ranges, except the slim georgian bricks or the handmade types. These are the ones we are looking at atm.
http://www.australbrick.com.au/wa/product.php?ID=182 But I'm having trouble matching things to it. It looks more red IRL. Who are you building with, monkey? Re: Bricks... 20Jun 25, 2008 9:56 pm Are you building with WA C.... builders Matrix? We've ended up picking the "collie" from austral bricks. I nearly got DH to agree to "coral bay"but my personal preference would have been for something like
'Wyvern" if picking from austral. Or something more of a mudbrick colour from the Midland brick range. Last time we had a creamish brick with brown flecks that isn't made anymore from Midland brick.
