Browse Forums Building A New House Re: _lucinda's house 41May 19, 2013 9:33 pm Two weeks? Not long to go at all. I think I will agonise more after selections when I can't change my mind than before ha ha. Went to sushi train yesterday, it is very swank. Love the shopping centre and the estate is really starting to take shape. Think it will be lovely when finished Re: _lucinda's house 42May 19, 2013 10:14 pm _lucinda And then there's the cupboards, I specified in the contract that all cupboards would be to ceiling--I've since found out that "to ceiling" means a long piece of buidler's infill so that cupboards don't really go all the way up at all. I know... I am SO annoyed about that! I had no idea!!! Weird I know but I was keen on a black kitchen. I can probably have it in laminex provided the cabinetmaker agrees, I sign to say that I waive any right to have cupboard doors replaced if any damage is caused before handover, and be aware that black scratches and marks really easily so there probably will be damage before handover. So I'm back to black benchtop on white cupboards--pretty safe, but doesn't give the wow factor I was hoping for. White cupboards are so safe! I've yet to find out if the only gloss I can have is the Egger brand--I'm not keen on Egger because I had some sample sent to me and one of them snapped in half so it doesn't seem to be very strong but I shouldn't judge from such a small sample. We weren't allowed to have black laminex, they just said it wasnt available, unless i wanted to upgrade to the super expensive gloss panels! In my person opinion (given that its the choice for our kitchen!), the white with black stone looks great! Yes, its safe.. but it won't date as badly either. Have you thought about a splashback? _lucinda I think I'll ask for white gloss cupboards with black quartz benchtops; and black or dark grey floor tiles with light grey wall tiles in the bathroom and laundry--if I can find ones that won't cost an arm and a leg and that they agree to use. Sounds much like our kitchen We have silk gloss laminex in our kitchen and smartstone in 'star black'. A light to medium grey floor tile, and white wall tiles in the bathroom. Feel free to follow our build! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59958 Re: _lucinda's house 43May 20, 2013 7:45 am FairmontSAcustom Two weeks? Not long to go at all. Hope they start the train (as in transport ) soon because I want to have a station there by the time we move in. sammymac We weren't allowed to have black laminex, they just said it wasnt available, unless i wanted to upgrade to the super expensive gloss panels! Do you recall how much extra, roughly? It's odd they allow black gloss but not black laminex--what's the difference? Was the gloss black a wrap? You are right, black cupboards is a statement and one that I might well get fed up with after a time. White won't date. And my husband's not too keen on all black. Quote: Have you thought about a splashback? I had glass splashback included in our contract. Somehow or other the salesperson didn't realise I wanted the splashback on both walls above the bench--would be really weird to have it on only one--so I've already been told it will cost several thousand more than the contract. I love the plain standard glass--it throws a pale green colour which I think will look lovely above a black benchtop. Would be even nicer with black cabinets! Re: _lucinda's house 44May 20, 2013 11:43 am From memory, the black gloss panels were around $40-50 more per panel! The silk gloss laminex was only $16 more per panel. The splashback shouldn't cost several thousand more! Thats crazy, especially if some is already included. Feel free to follow our build! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59958 Re: _lucinda's house 45May 20, 2013 1:02 pm Lucinda, Depending on the area size of the splashback it shouldn't be several thousands!! Mine was way under that for 2 sections that I had done in my renos. I have a contact who does splashbacks if you want to get it done after. Just a happy customer so no affiliation. Information very helpful. Jo, if we can't afford the builder's prices, I'll ask for that contact. Re: _lucinda's house 47May 23, 2013 3:11 pm I think your with Charles sturt council Lucinda? If so they have an online service. We built a verandah and I used to stalk their website They also sent me a letter when approved. Mitcham council is antiquated and there is no online service, at least at this stage they seem to be speedy. Pics of selections please Re: _lucinda's house 48May 23, 2013 7:59 pm Hi FairmontSAcustom, yes, I'm with Charles Sturt Council. I don't think anything has gone to them yet. We have selections on Wednesday--aaaaggggrrrhhhhhh!!!!!--then we will have to cut back on them because we won't be able to afford everything I want. After that I expect things to go to the estate approving committee to be matched up with the plans we have already sent for an open top pergola and landscaping--council doesn't need those. I think only then will things get to council but I could be wrong. I hope to have photos of my choices next week. Because we are in the outback, it'll take us a day to drive down, a day to race around to the suppliers to make sure my husband can live with my choices (he hasn't seen anything on my list other than what I can try to show him on the internet, when he just glances and shrugs), then to the appointment on Wednesday. Tuesday night I'm sure I'll be rewriting my list. Re: _lucinda's house 49May 23, 2013 9:19 pm Your husband sounds like mine, makes choosing even harder. You will be exhausted by the end of selections. I hope you get super helpful people. What are you doing in the outback. When your house is finished will you be permanently based in Adelaide? Mitcham council is antiquated and there is no online service, at least at this stage they seem to be speedy. Pics of selections please We concur, we reside in Charles Sturt and through their online I-Services I was able to see when Building Rules were approved and thereafter when Development Approval was in place. We knew things had been approved before the Builder as we monitored closely when we knew the application was lodged in the system. I do hear that sometimes they may have the application but do not update the online system for a few days or a week after receipt. There are a few double storeys listed, and a couple of single, but not us yet. When we move, yes, we'll be permanently in Adelaide. My dog is a Maltese X (poodle we think, but we adopted him from the RSPCA so can't be sure). One of those "silly little white things", not the one in my avatar picture. Would be worse going to Sydney so I should count my blessings we're moving to Adelaide. Tomorrow will be a trial--dragging husband to all the suppliers to show him what I've chosen so far. I'm going for back and white kitchen, bathroom and laundry, but still not sure of the finish for the cupboards but time is running out. Brick will be dark--again final decision to be made tomorrow. I am excited but also anxious because of costs and having to go for second or even third preferences. I'll all be over soon and then I'll probably miss it all. Will put photos up when we get home and hope that I don't have to replace too much.
