Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 24, 2008 9:28 pm I need some advice. I recently discussed with the lovely guy who was in charge of our frame (H) about putting extra noggins in for towel rails and hanging TVs. He said he was happy to do it and even got me to mark where I wanted them on the frame. At the end of this visit our site supervisor turned up and I mentioned that I had been marking the spots for noggins and he gave me a funny look (this worried me because he seems like a very straight down the line guy i.e. if it is not in the contract it is not happening).
Today was the frame completion day and I was at the site but I could not speak to H because he was on the roof. Our SS was there so I said "will my noggins get done today?" and he said after a pause "did H say he would do them?" and I confirmed. He said then yes they will be done today but I still had a funny feeling. Anyway we went past tonight and of course they are not done and the frame is definitely finished. I am so frustrated by this because every place I have lived the towel rails have been falling off the wall because they are only into plaster. PD do not provide towel rails and now we have no noggins. My partner and I are no hopers when it comes to handy man stuff so we cannot do them ourselves. My question is do you think it is worth us looking up a carpenter and paying them especially to go and put noggins in all the places we want? Do you actually need them for towel rails and say hanging a 50inch TV??? Do you think we would get in trouble for doing this as it might compromise the frame? I feel there is no point talking to our SS about this because I already know he will point out that it is not in the contract. Re: Help! Frame Finished No Extra Noggins... 2Apr 24, 2008 10:21 pm Easy to do and so long as you get them so they are within the stud line - no-one will remove them on you.
and yes - to hang a TV or a towel rail - highly recommneded to have the screws into timber and not plaster. Re: Help! Frame Finished No Extra Noggins... 3Apr 24, 2008 10:33 pm I'd be fitting them yourself if you have site access. You can still do it while the brickies are working - up until the gyprock goes on.
So you have time to measure up, go home, cut them to size, then go back & fit them later. Also, I'd be turning the noggins upright, and putting them in between the studs so that their 'face' is against the gyprock side, so that you then have a wider area to screw into - you can get both screws for the towel rail brackets into timber! Re: Help! Frame Finished No Extra Noggins... 4Apr 28, 2008 10:24 pm For towel rails and toilet roll holders etc there are some great plasterboard anchors that are easily obtainable at your local mitre 10/bunnings. There are many manufacturers and at the end of construction any local handyman will wack all your requirements up in no time at all. As for your plasma many people install plasma tv's into older homes by way of external fixing across the plasterboard wall (secured to the existing studs) then the tv supports fixed to this. Although nogs are of great value there are many ways to "skin a cat" so to speak. Good Luck Re: Help! Frame Finished No Extra Noggins... 5Apr 28, 2008 10:58 pm I think you worried too much, adding extra nogging won't add much value as don't think noggings are for supporting any weight, it's the stud's job.
Get a private inspector before the internal walls are installed to check all the frames (and noggings of course), things should be alright. Re: Help! Frame Finished No Extra Noggins... 6Apr 28, 2008 11:10 pm I'm no handyman guru either, but I wouldn't be hanging a tv on a noggin. Maybe a towel rail or toilet roll holder but definitely not a tv.
In regards to a towel rail, we overcame this problem by hanging a towel ladder instead. One side of the towel ladder is screwed into a stud in two positions and the other side is just on plaster. We figured that the two points on the stud would be strong enough to hold two towels. [sneakersss] This is 100% true.
