Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 05, 2013 8:44 pm So we've been in our house for just over a month, and the utensil draw is already a mess. There's not even any knives in there (since DH is a chef and his knives are worth so much, they are in a special hidden drawer haha), but it's so full, it's ridiculous. So I want to see yours! Do you use more than one drawer? Do you keep some of your most-used utensils somewhere else? I need a solution! 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: Show us your utensil drawer! 2May 05, 2013 8:58 pm Following this thread with interest - as we're currently building but have in our plans 2 x utensil drawers (at top of banks of drawers either side of oven).... Would love to hear how others use theirs? We have one drawer for general cooking tools ( tongs/peelers/garlic press/spoons/spatulas etc etc )and one filled with baking tools( pastry brush/cutters/fav baking spatula/tablespoons/measuring cups/more spoons etc etc). we also a standard cutlery drawer and another filled with baking paper/foil/gladwrap/freezer bags. Could do with 2 more so that I'd have 2 for general cooking and 2 for baking gear instead of the one for each I have now. hmm make that another 3/4. Then I could have one or two for spare teatowels, pot mitts, table mats, cork mats. Re: Show us your utensil drawer! 4May 06, 2013 10:06 am Can't take a picture of ours as it isn't in yet. As our current cutlery drawer overflows we have made our cutlery drawer 950mm wide to try and alleviate this problem Modified Fernside 38 Rawson Homes Blog: http://www.thehousethatmatandjenbuilt.blogspot.com Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60501 Re: Show us your utensil drawer! 5May 06, 2013 4:25 pm Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is what's getting out in ours. We have like 4 forks and a knife so it shouldn't be too bad....but this insert trips me out hahaha. I wanna get one of those bamboo trays that you can slide the compartments around in and out a slidey tray over the top for another level. I generally have two drawers dedicated to utensils plus a holder near the oven. I hate overly full drawers, it does my head in trying to pull stuff out and stabbing yourself in the process haha. It is next to the hob so the other half of that drawer is wooden spoons, potato masher, etc thrown in, but they all fit, On the island we have 2 x 900 wide drawers, one with spices in laid on their cardboard backs, And the other with general cutlery ( everyday stuff) and that takes up 600 in a cutlery insert thing and the other part is like kex, glad, foil, sandwich bags and grease proof. That's me done, We have a knife block on the bench. That's the only thing on the bench. Re: Show us your utensil drawer! 7May 06, 2013 7:52 pm haha I've been thinking about this as my draws have always been a mess and I pretty much have to take out half the draw to find that one thing. I want it to be neat and tidy in the new house and i think it comes down to the fact that i have too much sh!t and a few doubles or different sizes of serving spoons etc, unlike my best friend who has just the one of each and her draws are pretty and perfect!!! Re: Show us your utensil drawer! 8May 07, 2013 7:25 am I have 2 spoons etc. why have more if you don't need them. I have 3 pots and a frying pan ( plus an electric frying pan) for 7 of us My pot drawer is neat and tidy!! Same with my utensils drawer. One set of tongs. At Christmas I wish I had 5 sets... But you just make do. Just have enough to fill a drawer and get drawer cutlery holder things, makes all the difference. Although saying that, my 1 tong, 2 spoons , a fish slice and masher, salad servers are not in compartments, just thrown in next to a cutlery compartment! Re: Show us your utensil drawer! 9May 07, 2013 10:07 am When we emptied our kitchen cupboards before the KDRB in 2004/5 there was stuff in the back corners we hadn’t seen for 10 years. We had been married 23 years so it was obvious the current stuff would be yuk in a new place so we threw everything out and I vowed I would only buy stuff I needed. The kitchen builder suggested the inserts with the movable bits and they were so good I used them in this place as well. These are my current drawers:- Cutlery (drawer 1 of 4 in island)(drawers 2/3=crockery, 4=wrap, foil etc) http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s507/grumblebum54/CutleryDrawer_zps6e30641e.jpg Utensil drawer 1 (left of stove) http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s507/grumblebum54/Utensil1_zps9407e39f.jpg Utensil drawer 2 (right of stove) Utensil drawer 3 (in the pantry) Regards, Grumbles Re: Show us your utensil drawer! 11May 07, 2013 10:59 am The ' 3 in the pantry' of grumbles is what I have next to my stove. Grumble...how often do you use the corn cob things!!?? And are you ADD? Can you come sort mine out. Re: Show us your utensil drawer! 12May 07, 2013 11:45 am Funny about the corn thingys, they only seem to get used when the kids visit. We usually sit down to eat and then realise we forgot them and are too lazy to get up and get them. I have 28 drawers in the kitchen and pantry so there is room for everything and I don’t buy things any more just because I like them. The only diseases I have at the moment are memory loss and lazyarse syndrome. Regards, Grumbles Re: Show us your utensil drawer! 14May 07, 2013 2:04 pm This is our drawer - DH kitted it out himself as we couldn't find an insert that fit ... wish we had 3 drawers for utensils Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: Show us your utensil drawer! 15May 07, 2013 9:35 pm GB - where did you buy those inserts? Perfect! We currently have one entire o/h cupboard not being used, so I may put the contents of my 'gladwrap' draw in there and use that draw for utensils instead! But this inserts look great! 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: Show us your utensil drawer! 16May 07, 2013 9:41 pm I want those inserts too! They go right to the edge of the drawer, you can get them in many different sizes, they have small and big divided sections and you can move the dividers to suit your gear. I got mine through the kitchen builders but don’t know the price, they are made by Hettich and here is a link to their catalogue.
