Browse Forums Building A New House Re: High ceilings - what happens with the windows? 21Aug 10, 2014 3:32 pm Hi, i run into the exact same dilemma when dealing with my design. I've upgraded to 2710mm Ceiling Height, originally the builder left the door & window sizes as standard. Luckily i knew about this problem when increasing ceiling height. I've gone with the following. 2710mm Ceiling 2348mm Doors 2020mm Windows (Centered) Originally i had the window height at 1800mm. Now you could increase the height of the windows even more, although personally i don't feel like paying a massive amount of blinds & potential double glazing costs. Re: High ceilings - what happens with the windows? 22Aug 10, 2014 3:37 pm When you upgrade to 2.7m ceilings, you should upgrade your window heights and door heights as well. Standard door height is usually 2m and to upgrade to 2.3m it's about $100 for each door. From looking at countless display homes you'll note that they have all upgraded windows/door heights. Also, do NOT believe what sales people tell you. I've had sales people from two different building companies walk me through their display homes telling me what came standard, but as I bought along a tape measurement I found that all their doors and windows were upgraded which did NOT come standard with their building packages, despite telling me they did. Sales people will try and tell you anything to get you signed up. Re: High ceilings - what happens with the windows? 23Aug 10, 2014 5:07 pm Yep upgrading doors and window heights looks good with high ceilings however I challenge that it only costs a 100 per door. Maybe just for the standard frame. It adds up pretty quick when you have changed to solid core doors, square edge profile frames and changed the door from plain to textured. It adds thousands, but still looks nicer and more proportioned. Re: High ceilings - what happens with the windows? 24Aug 10, 2014 5:10 pm The upgrade from 2040 to 2348mm Door Frames with doors included was roughly $120 Per door. Upgrading my windows was $10 per window, although i ran into issues with 6-Star Energy Rating as it was more glass. Re: High ceilings - what happens with the windows? 25Aug 10, 2014 5:18 pm gipps Just hoping someone can give us a little advice. On our plan we have 2700mm ceiling but the sliding door to the alfresco is only 2000 high. We are not sure if this will make the door look strange with 700mm wall on top of the door, should we make the door higher? But then it]s top won't be in line with the windows. Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Hi there, with 2.7m ceilings a 2m door to alfresco sounds quite short to me but maybe this was what you wanted? I'm having 31c ceilings (2.7m) with 28c windows/sliders in the open plan Kitchen/dining living. Re: High ceilings - what happens with the windows? 26Aug 10, 2014 5:28 pm @Akula, mine was more as I changed the door jambs to a different spec, the doors to solid core for all and the heights. Windows were different as I am having double glazing. Sound like you are getting a good deal, wish mine were only that much. Re: High ceilings - what happens with the windows? 27Aug 10, 2014 6:32 pm Our builder was just going to leave the windows and doors all over the place. We have 2740 ceiling height and our sliding doors are 2100 in height so we got all of our windows put at a 2100 head height, although the windows and doors are different sizes it doesn't look out of proportion or strange because all the tops are at the same height. We are at plaster stage, have a look if you'd like. http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&p=1215340#p1215340 Building a Sierra on the Gold Coast https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=68899 Full timeline on Pg 1 Settlement: 13/05/14 Retaining Walls: 20/06/14 Site Start: 02/07/14 Re: High ceilings - what happens with the windows? 28Aug 11, 2014 10:15 pm AussieMark Yep upgrading doors and window heights looks good with high ceilings however I challenge that it only costs a 100 per door. The biggest surprise to me was the staircase and sliding doors! I was charged $1500 to upgrade the staircase height and another $3,000 to upgrade the timber stacking door height from 2.1m to 2.7m. Re: High ceilings - what happens with the windows? 30Oct 01, 2014 3:13 pm There are a couple of ideas that could be applied the window could butt up to the underside of the ceiling or you could form up a bulkhead above the windows Thanks mate.
