Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 01, 2013 12:17 am Hi, we've decided that we would like to have bamboo flooring in our entry, living area and hallways. We'll put carpet into the bedrooms, to make it more pleasant on the bare feet. The question for us now is not so much about a company, but more about which way of laying them down should we go for? To my knowledge you can have them either floating or glued down, and both have their advantages. Floating + Cheaper to lay (less work hours) + Can be done by a reasonable DIY + Most wooden floors in Europe are laid floating - Louder to walk on - Can't be sanded if worn too much Fixed + Longer lasting as it can be sanded a few times + Quieter to walk on + Superior quality end result - More expensive to lay - Laying requires better DIY skills The main challenge for us is that I feel comfortable to lay floating bamboo myself, but would need to ask a professional to lay the fixed flooring, which has a big impact on the cost of the flooring. We had a look last weekend and found that the fixed laying of the bamboo floor usually cost around the $40/m2, which is a fair cost for our 100m2 which need flooring. So part of me is saying that I can either spend around $6000 for a floating floor and take the time to do it myself, or then spend $10'000 for a fixed floor. Am I then better off installing a floating floor now and just replace the whole floor in 8 years, or spend a bit more and have it sanded in 8 years? The first one is more work, but gives me the advantage to have a new look. And while I've done reasonable research, I might have missed something. Do you see any other advantages or disadvantages for a floating/fixed bamboo floor? We're making the assumption that we can get bamboo of equal quality and colour in both laying techniques. There are number of shops around Perth selling Bamboo from a variety of manufacturers so we'll just have to shop around. It's a difficult decision and we've been wrecking our brains for a while now. All opinions to help us make a decision are welcome ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Building with Redink in Madeley WA Photos: http://s1244.photobucket.com/user/takat ... yHouse2012 Moved in 01/06/2013 Next project: Lanscaping Re: Bamboo flooring - which way to lay? 2May 01, 2013 7:41 am In our last house we had a floating floor (not bamboo) and it was OK but it did creak a little in areas where there was a large expanse of floor. When we built our new house we opted for direct stick as it also has some fairly large areas and we wanted to avoid the creak. I wasn't interested in DIY, so that wasn't a factor for me. The direct stick feels and sounds more solid than the floating floor did and I am very happy with out choice.
