Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 26, 2013 9:28 am Hi all, Thinking of adding some insulation to some internal walls. (Builder is already doing external walls). Main thought is for a bit of noise control, but any environmental gains would be good too... So, I can get Pink Batts cheaply, and they do say "Pink Batts® Insulation has the added benefit of being an effective sound absorber and so contributes to both the thermal and acoustic comfort of building occupants." Actual insulation sold as acoustic insulation is a lot more expensive. The Pink Batts people even have their own acoustic insulation. This is making me thing standard cheap pink batts probably aren't great for acoustic insulation. We don't have a German thrash metal band playing in the lounge room at 4am every morning that we need to block out, just the occasional bit of TV noise etc. Anyone have any idea whether standard pink batts (R1.5 / 75mm) are "good enough", or they really aren't that effective and I need "proper" acoustic insulation. Thanks. Re: Internal insulation 2Apr 26, 2013 1:13 pm An alternative, depending on how locked-in your are regarding variations, would be to change the plaster. Mass is better, and the fluffier middle is ok with Pink Batts. Not that the sellers will ever agree. Level 1. Change 1 side to Fire Rated, same thickness. 10 FR or 12FR Level 2. Change 1 side to thicker Fire Rated. 10<13 Level 3. Change both sides, Fire Rated, but different thicknesses on both. 13 + 16 FR Option to suit your budget. Many Sound Studios use the same principle, but often with 2 sheets on each side of different thicknesses. A pricey way to go. If affordable, Level 3 obviously more mass, harder for noise to get through. Common issue is compressing thicker insulation internally. That makes matters worse, as it then bridges the walls. t Re: Internal insulation 3Apr 26, 2013 5:10 pm Thanks for the reply. At this it's too late to change plaster - I'm just putting insulation in a couple of walls and am interested to know if the pink batts really do anything to help with noise or not! Re: Internal insulation 4Apr 26, 2013 5:29 pm No problem. Yes, insulation will help. There may be better options, a bit pricier than Pinks, but less than " Sound Batts ". Fluffy is fine, Gold Batts, Autex or Tontine, Knauf, others. It does depend on budget, as always. Sorry, don't know costs, but there are a couple of very important principles you need to get right (and now) .... (1) never agree to any "upgrade" unless you first know… 5 6803 Thanks. Yeh ideally that would have been good, but have progressed too far now. Hoping some well placed internal walls fixed up into the battens will provide some… 2 5370 Thank you alexp79 and gommeqld for your advice, that's very helpful, thanks 3 7889 |
