Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Selections Choices - Are you bound to what's in the book 21Apr 28, 2013 2:33 pm Not yet. I thought I wanted PVC wrap, and I know many are exceedingly happy with it, but I've been turned right off with thoughts of yellowing and peeling around heat sources. If it were bronze level I might try it with the idea of replacing the doors if/when there is a problem but to pay extra and then pay to have them replaced is way outside of budget. Then I decided I'd be dramatic and go for black, but that is apparently the worst laminate to work with and will cost even more than gold level and requires permission form the cabinetmaker (which I read as meaning no cabinetmaker in his or her right mind would work with black unless you pay both arms and legs). I want a solid, dark colour but scratches on white (not gloss) are almost undetectable, whereas they are dreadful on black. Same with greasy fingermarks. The timber-look ones tend to hide both much better but don't give me the look I want. Currently I'm thinking about charcoal, eggplant (if I was game), burnished wood (which is probably okay but doesn't quite give me the wow feeling I want) and espresso (which is in the silver range but I don't really like the colour). Why espresso is silver and not charcoal I have no idea--both samples I have show fingermarks just as much as each other. The only samples I have are those 7.5 cm ones so they don't really give a good idea of how a whole kitchen would look in them. Then there's the benchtop. I had my heart set on black stone, and the galileo would be okay (except I'm not overly keen on the specks), but doesn't look good with any of the dark colours, except black! So I'm also considering the lighter stone--crystal chalk or bone white. I quite like the bone white but it's not as glossy as the galileo. I love the way I can see my face in the galileo but there's hardly any reflection in the bone white. I'm coming down to Adelaide this week for some specialist appointments and hoping to squeeze in a visit to Farquhar at Marion--with any luck I'll walk in and go "that's what I want" and the dilemma will be over. Re: Selections Choices - Are you bound to what's in the book 22Apr 28, 2013 2:51 pm It's hard isn't it? The kitchen is the one area you want to be happy with... If you feel like you're "settling" it makes you quite uncomfortable! Black looks great, but as you said isn't practical and no one will do it! My auntie got vinyl wrapped cabinets when she re did their kitchen in 2009 and they are already peeling... Especially the ones near the stove. They paid a fair haul to renovate too, so she's a bit peeved to say the least! Anyway, the lady at Farquhar was really helpful with me and looked at my colour in the book and said its on their list and comes in the required cuts/format to use it. I'd recommend going to Laminex as well, see all the colours! I hope you get your "I love it and want that" moment!!! Thanks for the luck, hachy, I think I'm going to need it. How much are you ahead in payments compared to where the build is at?
