Well, it sure was frustrating last night to come home after 2 days of hard slog cleaning at the new house, with a window of about half an hour before I had to start packing up and getting ready for a sunday swap meet (for which I had to arise at 3am!) to write quickly on the forum and update everyone; only to write a big long post and have it wiped by my stoopid 'puter just as I was about to submit it! Maybe it was a good thing, as I was in a dark mood from discovering SO much damage at the house whilst in the process of giving it a decent clean. Which begs the question: do some builders deliberatly not clean the homes properly in order to disguise damage until it's too late and you already have keys? Or am I paranoid and bitter? Friday night (after late arvo key handover) and Saturday were a bit of a nightmare for me; which is a total shame as it's meant to be an exciting experience getting the keys to your new build - and I was all ready to revel in that excitement. Until I walked through my front door and discovered that our house was, in fact, filthy dirty and in need of MANY man hours of cleaning before anything could be out into the house. Our SS did specify it would only be a 'builder's clean', but I was expecting something a little better than what we got. Think dust EVERYWHERE (even on all doors and walls), not one mirror, glass panel, splashback, cupboard, shower door or window wiped at all, sawdust inside almost every cupboard, wee wees in our toilets, paint splatters from 'a' to 'b', dirty and dusty carpets, etc, and you'd be on the right track. I'd estimated Friday night and saturday all day would be more than enough time to clean the house from top to bottom,, and sunday would be spent at the swap meet and then, after arriving home, moving certain things to the new house like pantry goods, bathroom products, linens into the linen cupboard, kitchen products into the kitchen cupboards.... But no, after about 10 man hours cleaning, I'm still less than 50% done - which aint great as I have messy trades starting at 7am tomorrow, so I'm going to be on the back foot instead of a step ahead. Moving is hard enough without the added stress of these scenarios! Furthermore, all that cleaning, whilst bringing about a good feeling, allowed me to discover what all the muck had been disguising...lots of scratches, chips, flakes, stray putty, paint overspray, cracks, missed paint and the like, occurring enough to make the strongest-reserved person weep. Please refer to the below pics for a few choice examples... However, after having a sook and being consoled by a bedraggled hubby (who had been working like a demon all day to transport boxes to the new garage, and help the kerbing dude kerb our front garden beds in the searing heat), I consciously decided to end the evening on a high note and took some nice pictures to remind me what the main objective was, and is. I'll put those photos first, as they're more important Taken with iphone, sorry for crappy resolution... Your house is just stubbing momomo! I'm a wee bit jealous Congratulations once again Secondly. I don't think you're being too fussy with any of your concerns! That is overall quite disappointing maybe one or two of those things you could be like, ok, I'll let that go. But that is quite a number! And from all different trades, not just one. What happened to cleaning up after yourself?!(in regards to saw dust) The essa stone is so disappointing. I'll be interested to see the outcome, if any. I completely understand how you feel after spending so much for it. And thirdly. Have I ever mentioned how much I just adore that bathroom?! Maybe once or twice I think.... But I'm in love! Love your splash back!! Is that "mink sparkle" I am hoping so as that is what we are having?
Have to say that I would not be impressed at all at the handover condition of some of the pics you have shown. I am not sure what to expect when we receive keys but if I found any of the damage/ lack of finishing you have shown I would be unimpressed!! On the up side your home is gorgeous and it shouldn't take much effort on the builders part to get the finishing details right. All the best to you Re: Sim & Gwyn's Baldivis Build with Aveling - Keys :) 952Nov 17, 2013 3:45 pm First off I love all your selections ! They are just beautiful! ... I think the essa stone bench top would annoy me the most... The shower door handle is ridiculous!!- it's not the worst I've seen but definitley should be up to a standard you are happy with Re: Sim & Gwyn's Baldivis Build with Aveling - Keys :) 953Nov 17, 2013 3:48 pm Overall house is looking stunning momomo, but no you are not overreacting. I would be furious with that level of sloppiness too!! Should be up to the builder to fix, not you... And what's this "builders clean" business? Surely the price of building should include a proper cleaning service to come in before handover! And it is lovely, you won't regret. It changes colour and shade in different lights and from different angles - sometimes it's quite green, at other times brown. And I don't think I'll be letting another Aveling tradesmand across the threshold of our home! Hubby is very handy so he'll do the fixes himself (with the possible exception of the essastone - which I may insist Aveling replace if they can't buff the writing off)! Hmmph! jaceb Firstly. My build: viewtopic.php?t=62001 Thanks Jaceb Overall we love the house, it's our brainchild and our pride and joy - and that's definitely the main thing. It's disappointing that others (tradies) haven't respected it as much as it deserves, but and that just some tradies for ya? We'll get her fixed up and perfect again I was in a bad way yesterday (and no doubt will be at some point again over the coming weeks), but today I'm determined to not let the negatives outweigh the positives. It feels nicer, for sure And yeah, the bathroom turned out pretty sweet, huh?! Absolutely seething, what a bunch of a$$holes thinking anyone would be happy with that? Not quite sure who to direct my anger at though, the supplier or the builder! Thanks Sammi, and yeah - it totally should include a proper clean. What's the point of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a great project only to skimp on a couple of hundred dollars at the final step and handing it over without the spit and polish?! It just creates a bad feeling at what should be an exciting time... What a beautiful home!! you guys really did well with your selections, looks very classy I'd be rather annoyed with the damage and dirt as well, I know that our essastone bench has no writing underneath the overhang but not sure if it wasn't there to begin with or if it got taken off? I'd be asking for the edges to be buffed too as those scratch marks need attention! You've paid a lot for this house and put a lot of your time into it so there is no such thing as being too fussy we are all the same!! Oh and congrats on keys!!!!! Re: Sim & Gwyn's Baldivis Build with Aveling - Keys :) 958Nov 17, 2013 5:27 pm second that, I LOVE the bathrooms, and your tiles, your TILES! very jealous Just made a note to myself, I've got to remember to check my essastone, that's not acceptable. Stay positive tho, your house looks amazing and there's no major issue, those little things will be fixed eventually. Re: Sim & Gwyn's Baldivis Build with Aveling - Keys :) 959Nov 17, 2013 5:32 pm The house is just amazing!! Thos ebathrooms look like a high end hotel!! I know exactly how you feel about the bench, I'd be interested what they say. This is my ongoing issue with the builder. Ill be raising it again at the 6 month maintenance inspection and if ey still do nothing we will complain to the building commission. I also know how you feel about the mess and dirt!! Ours was similar and we found similar damage nice the house was clean, most were fixed after I sent a letter to the CL outlining my concerns. We had to have 3 windows replaced as the glass was that badly scratched! Enjoy your beautiful house but also don't feel guilty for being upset at what you have found Re: Sim & Gwyn's Baldivis Build with Aveling - Keys :) 960Nov 17, 2013 5:35 pm I love the kitchen and bar it flows together so beautifully .......the bathrooms are sweet too.... If I was you I would send an email documenting all of your concerns (I don't think you are being too picky at all) I'd use your thread as your basis of the email and send it to your CLO, ss and also the MD of aveling. Thank you so much everyone. This all makes a lot of sense. I guess when you talk to a builder who butters up everything to look very polished, you get to start believing… 7 17511 thank you! do we need to get this or our builder before we commence new build on the block? 2 10404 Hi, did you get any money from insurance? if you did, does it match what you've already paid the builders? 3 9559 |
