Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 16, 2013 7:41 pm Just been to have a look at the house and tiling is almost completed - just the grounting to do. When we did our tile selections we liked a couple of feature tiles that weren't in the standard builders range so we requested them and the tile company sent our selections to our builder and we were charged $2,300 extra because we chose non-standard/more expensive tiles than the builders standard range. To my way of thinking they should have only ordered the amount actually needed with the standard 10% extra for breakages but while I was there tonight I noticed that there are a huge surplus of the feature tiles. One of the selected tiles costs $30 each tile only 10 tiles were needed (they are mosaic so they fit exactly into the space) but 20 tiles were ordered - thats double what we needed and $300 extra. Another feature tile - only 9 tiles were needed and 20 tiles were ordered - again another expensive tile. The list goes on with our rectified 750mm x 250mm white tiles - we have 5 whole boxes left over. My question is...... do I just accept that by my calculations I've paid about $1000 for tiles that were never needed or can I question the builder? Also because they were non-standard tiles we were charged extra for laying them - do I query if I was charged extra per square metre that was actually laid OR was I charged extra laying charges for the actual square meterage that was ORDERED? Perhaps being a bit picky here but don't want the builder just ordering stuff willy nilly that people have to pay for even if not needed. Re: Tiling question - anyone? 2Apr 16, 2013 8:44 pm You are making us worried! We ordered a couple of more expensive tiles, but there was so few needed that the people in the store said it would only be a few hundred dollars extra total.. but we have not been quoted yet. Tiles have arrived at site though, we should probably have a look at how many they ordered. We are so much over budget it's not even funny, we can not afford any more blow outs. Re: Tiling question - anyone? 3Apr 16, 2013 8:49 pm If they won't give you any money back then keep all the tiles don't let them take them away when you've paid for them Re: Tiling question - anyone? 4Apr 16, 2013 8:52 pm I would check what quantity the pack of tiles come in. If its 20 per pack, and you only need 10, you have to pay for the whole pack. When I recently did my bathroom/laundry renos if there are excess tiles you can only return unopened packets. Re: Tiling question - anyone? 6Apr 16, 2013 11:27 pm Thanks everyone. Tompab sorry if I worried you - I'm sure yours will be fine - our whole tiling period has been incorrect so I'm sure its just an incompetent supplier. Our cost included increased laying costs because there were mosaics and rectified large tiles. The tiles concerned are purchased per tile as we phoned the tile company to inquire. Will phone the builder tomorrow to try sort something out. Really would like a refund as I don't know what we'd do with so many extra tiles but if they won't refund then definitely going to keep them. Thanks again Re: Tiling question - anyone? 7Apr 17, 2013 4:33 am some our tiles were per tile others were per box. as we bought all our tiles we were able to really calculate finely so have hardly any tiles left over . i would question the builder and ask allthe best hope you can get a variation Re: Tiling question - anyone? 8Apr 17, 2013 8:22 am Unfortunately, you didn't pay for the tiles, you paid for the job to be completed. They did the job you agreed to. They could smash the spare tiles if they wanted to. They ordered extra because it's much less hassle to have extra tiles than be short of tiles (plus as mentioned there are minimum orders). The builder prob would have paid $100 for the $300 of tiles. Keep the extra tiles. It may be a different story if you paid for the labour only and the tiler asked you to supply materials. Re: Tiling question - anyone? 9Apr 17, 2013 11:27 pm JB we did pay for the tiles - they sent us the "extra over" costings and they calculated how much more we'd have to pay for the more expensive tiles and then separately for the extra laying. We paid $1300 for the extra tiling costs and $900 for extra laying costs. Still haven't decided if we should just keep them or not. Re: Tiling question - anyone? 10Apr 18, 2013 6:50 am Anything custom ie outside of what the builder supplies normally they will charge at a premium, It all comes down to your negotiating skills and with that what is agreed before the job. What did you agree too? Do you have a quote in writing for the extra work? We have over 70 tiles left over from about a 130 square meters which is okay in my books as its down to how many where damaged on delivery and how good the tiler is. Ie the tiler that did our house was very good and used waste pieces a lot when he could and when he cut a tile he would get it right the first time. He was also did a little extra tiling and at no cost (extra row above bath). Blond1e Still haven't decided if we should just keep them or not. With the question of keeping the tiles or not, I would keep them for the future as if any of the tiles are damaged then you have them on hand to replace as in a few years down the track the tiles you have may not be available and matching them can be a nightmare. Looking to tile the facade pillars rather than rendering. Builder is quoting 2500$ laying cost for upto 10msq. The 2 pillars come to be 16msq. So laying costs are 5000$… 0 7548 Hi, I'm clearing the tiles from our horrid 50 year old bathroom and preparing to lay new ones. Bugger of a job getting the old… 0 8088 4 14463 |
