Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 09, 2013 3:34 pm Hey all Thought I would start this thread just to say Hi. I have been a voyeur on the site now for almost 2 months. We are looking at building our first house and been doing heaps of research. Looks like we have picked the winner for the build and currently Henley is in the lead. We like the Sahara Q1 floor plan so much and compared to the other big builders we just had too many changes to the plan which killed the price. Enough of that, time for a question. Has anyone built with Henley and done their own Data/Speaker wiring, nothing electrical of course? I have been told different things by different people some say don't risk it and do it with Henley but seems expensive at about $110 per point and not sure if that is both sides or not. Others have said butter up your site supervisor and he will let you do whatever you like. So I guess I would be keen to know if people have got away with doing their own wiring or if people recommend just wearing the cost and getting Henley to do it. Especially people in the south east. Also this one if a far out there question for anyone that has built with Henley and are in final stages. What hinges are used in the cupboards do they have a name of them. The reason I ask is I am thinking of retro fitting soft close to the cupboards after hand over. I can think of about 100 other questions I have but I don't want to overload you all on my first post and plus you might think I am crazy. Re: Hi and a Question or two - Henley 2Apr 09, 2013 4:14 pm Data cabling done by anyone other than a registered cabler is illegal. http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=IND_LIC_TEL_CABLE_COMP Just be aware of that before others post as to how easy it is to DIY. Speaker cabling does not fall under the restrictions and can be done yourself. $110 seems about the going rate 'per run', but some cablers do charge by the hour + equipment instead (usually better value if multiple points in the same location). Some options are (but not limited to) 1. Get your builder to do it an pay $110 data point 2. Get your builder to run conduit and have a third party install after handover (likely to be cheaper than builder rates) 3. If your builder allows third parties on site, have them do it during framing stage. 4. Get wireless Re: Hi and a Question or two - Henley 3Apr 09, 2013 4:57 pm We are building with Henley and are in the final stage. We went with option 3 from atom_ute's post. Regarding the hinges I am not sure which ones they have put. I was thinking of using soft close dampers. they are available on ebay if you are interested. Re: Hi and a Question or two - Henley 4Apr 09, 2013 6:15 pm atom_ute Sorry should clarify that when I meant myself I meant external to Henley with my own contractor. JagSKR Thanks for the feedback much appreciated. How did you mange to get your own contractors onto the site before handover all the sales consultants we have spoken to say nobody is allowed onsite during build due to insurance reasons. Re: Hi and a Question or two - Henley 7Apr 10, 2013 5:36 pm Just be very wary if you get an external contractor in to do your data cabling. Henley have in their contract that they will NOT be responsible for anything that happens to the cabling during the remainder of the build. I know it may be more expensive to have henley do it, but trust me, it's safer. I built with Henley and had 16 data points and a $200 10m HDMI cable to the Alfresco placed throughout my house by a contractor other than Henley. This was done during the frame stage and Henley knew all about it and all was good. When it came time for Henley's Electricians to come in and 'fit off' all the power points and TV points, they cut the HDMI cable to the Alfresco and fitted a plate to it, when it was not in their contract to do so, ie; it was not their job and had nothing at all to do with them, so they should never have touched it. Of course, by cutting the plug off the end of the HDMI cable, they rendered it totally useless...bye bye $200 and the ability to watch DVD's or something from the media player in the Alfresco. They refused to fix it. Just be wary, and don't be stung like I was! I know $200 isn't much in the grand scheme of things, but it's the principle of the matter! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ...
