Browse Forums Building A New House Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: Polar White 441Dec 09, 2013 4:59 pm We decided to pop by the build on Saturday evening after visiting friends as our SS had mentioned that the grano for the garage was due to be laid. We ended up doing a bit of a break and enter although I'm not sure how much of a B&E it is when the bathroom window is wide open and the back door is unlocked! Totally forgot to take any pics of the grano but I did get some iPhone pics of the progress inside. Our floor tiles for ensuite, bathroom, laundry and toilet. A little dusty, but really happy with the choice we made. http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag10/pants_de_fancy/screed1_zps13a5361d.jpg The OH approves too! http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag10/pants_de_fancy/screed3_zps753a9c62.jpg Screeding in the laundry... http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag10/pants_de_fancy/screed2_zpsc326eeb0.jpg …and toilet and bathroom. http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag10/pants_de_fancy/screed4_zps673312b8.jpg Nib wall and hob. http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag10/pants_de_fancy/screed6_zps43b720c9.jpg Screeding in the ensuite. http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag10/pants_de_fancy/screed7_zps50bdecca.jpg We have a nib wall in the ensuite but a hobless recess. http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag10/pants_de_fancy/screed8_zps742c6e5a.jpg It was also good to see the wardrobe doors had been installed as well. On a separate note; what colour door frames and doors have those of you with Laminex 'Polar White' cabinetry gone for? Our ceiling is the standard ceiling white and we've gone for Solver 'Designer White' for doors and frames, which was recommended to us at pre start. I really want our pantry door and laundry door to match with the rest of the kitchen so I'm now really worried that perhaps it's not white enough or will have a touch of pink or cream or grey which won't look right with all the 'Polar White'. Am I panicking over nothing or do we need to choose a different white? If we need to alter our choice we have to do it ASAP. Any advice appreciated. Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: Polar White 442Dec 09, 2013 8:59 pm Pics are looking great! I cant believe how much they have done! Mirrors, baths wow! We have gone for Solver white cliffs on our walls and 25% solver white cliffs on doors and frames. I have had alot of second thoughts about it because might not be white enough for me but will have to wait and see. Saying that though I have a laminated pantry door so not an issue in the kitchen. Although I do have a door leading into garage but its round the corner. I reckon you will be fine with designer white. Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: Polar White 443Dec 09, 2013 10:16 pm Looking good. Our pantry is laminate so didn't have to worry about that door but our laundry is off the kitchen. We went with taubmans Gemini silver. I didn't want the frames to have a cream tinge so was recommended that colour. I've not noticed it looking out of place. Our skirting is the same colour while ceiling and cornices is whatever they use as standard. Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: Polar White 444Dec 09, 2013 10:17 pm If you look at my thread where you can see doors in the kitchen they are painted Solver Breeze. I think designer white will prob still look white but we used it in our last house and it went cream so we chose something else. Hopefully you have no issues Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: Polar White 445Dec 09, 2013 10:18 pm fancy pants On a separate note; what colour door frames and doors have those of you with Laminex 'Polar White' cabinetry gone for? I won't bore you with the details, but I fought tooth and nail for Designer White on my doors and woodwork. I've seen the formula they use to mix the paint. Believe me, it is the whitest white you can get. We chose Platinum Micro bench tops - I'm a total copycat but once I saw yours I couldn't go past it! We have natural white cupboards as they complimented our floor tiles better. Can't wait to see your tiles in! We will also have wall paint breaking up the white cabinetry and white doors which should limit any direct comparison between the colours so I'm hopeful it will all turn out they way I've pictured it in my head. Everything else seems to be coming together nicely so far, so fingers crossed! It'll look great with natural white too. Hopefully we'll have some tile pics soon! Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: Scheduling? 451Dec 14, 2013 7:47 pm Can anyone give me an idea (based on your experiences) of how long it should take to do any/all of the following:
Lay carpets to four bedrooms Install solid wood flooring to rest of house Install pre-primed skirting boards to 80% of the house Paint the skirting boards ourselves Install roller blinds to most of the windows (is it up to 6 weeks to have blinds made?) Lay paving to alfresco, driveway and path As it's the arse end of the year and things are so busy, we've been a little slack in keeping on top of our scheduling. I'm now trying to figure out how much overlap there might be between tradies if we want things done quickly. I also suspect that I should have asked this question back in October. Whoops. Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: Scheduling? 452Dec 14, 2013 8:25 pm Are you having someone else paint the house? They may be able to do a good deal on painting them as well. Our skirting took 2 days to install, our house is 122m2 Pretty sure the carpet can be done in a day... Our painters took a day for the undercoat. They got messed about with painting due to our flooring issues so no idea how long it actually took them to paint! Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: Scheduling? 454Dec 15, 2013 12:24 am Our painting took ages as they did a bit and then were away for a week and then did another day and then away again. But i reckon between 3 painters they probably could have done just the walls with the 3 coats in a few days. Our carpet took half a day. Solid floors took almost 3 weeks from start to being able to move in. 2 days for moisture barrier, 5 days to lay, and 3 days to sand and polish but lots of breaks in between each stage. Our skirting guy took probably a day to install the skirting boards. Took me 20 hours to gap fill and paint the bedroom skirtings. Im still yet to start on the living rooms. Awful job! My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64437 Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: Scheduling? 456Dec 15, 2013 11:08 pm We were thinking: painting --> blinds --> driveway. This should leave the front semi established (at least with a paved driveway and path direct to the front door) to minimise the tracking of sand inside. Then: wood floors --> skirting --> carpet. At which point we should promptly run out of cash. I guess we should at least ask the painters about coming back to do the skirting… Who knew there was so much work involved in just establishing the 'shell' of a house? I have no idea what we're going to do with the back yard. Probably just sit in the alfresco and admire the sand for a while. And we don't actually have any furniture so we'll be borrowing the basics until we find the pieces we want to purchase. When we can afford it. Which looks to be some time in 2016. Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: Scheduling? 458Dec 15, 2013 11:27 pm Just talk to the skirting person, do they want flooring in first or after.... The painters often do a good job with the skirting as it isn't just painted they seal all the corners and between the top and wall. We were worried we'd see all the nails but there is only one in our WIR that's popped out a little and I think that happened when the WIR was installed. Know the feeling! It took us 3 months to get a letterbox!! And the front is still sand! Good luck Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: Scheduling? 459Dec 16, 2013 12:53 pm Thanks fmac, will have a chat with them. And we should probably think about a letterbox too!
