Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 25, 2013 11:51 am We are currently building a new house. Once we move in we won't have money left for all new furniture, plus a lot our current furniture is stained solid pine or recycled Oregon so I don't really want to dispose of it as it seems like such a waste. Wondering if anyone has much luck refurbishing 'country styled' pine furniture so it suits a new modern style 2 storey project home? Thanks Re: New house, old furniture 2Mar 25, 2013 12:06 pm Oh wow I read this and it's us to a tea. I'm in the same boat we had every intention of buying all new furniture but unfortunatly our circumstances had changed throughout the build we are stuck with all our tired old stuff. I love shabby chic French look so have attempted to re paint everything this I just completed over the weekend and I'm really pleased with it Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I've done the coffee table and sides in a distressed look but are not as happy with them. I enquired about getting our couch re upholstered still debating whether it's worth it or not. Our bed is pine and is next on the list to paint. Re: New house, old furniture 4Mar 25, 2013 12:17 pm Thanks Two coats but sanded and primed first. The knots were hidden with the second coat. The bed has a gloss finish so I was told I may need to get a shellac based stain blocker to prevent previous treatments bleeding through the top coat. All trial And error for me I'm all new to this myself. I got the crystal cabinet knobs on line they were not that pricey. I am going to do the same to the bedside tables and add the crystal knobs also to match. I also picked up a large white mirror from the r.ject shop really cheap but looks expensive for about $25 because it had a slight chip they were only 40 to begin with so still cheap. This should match everything painted so far. I think it's what you put with white that makes it look great, I've been a little eb@y HaPpy lately Re: New house, old furniture 5Mar 25, 2013 3:33 pm We definitely won't be having much new furniture in our new place, though we'll probably be due for new beds/mattresses by then. And we'll probably need a few extra bits and pieces we don't have room for now, eg, going from one lounge room to an open family plus a lounge. But my parents didn't have a brand new lounge suite until about 15 years after they built their house so I can put up with our new (but used by us) furniture ~ Anne I used to be indecisive but now I'm not quite sure. I have painted a lot of my old furniture for when we moved into our new house (and still more to do), and I can't recommend Zinsser BIN Primer highly enough! I've covered previously stained pine book shelves and the Zinsser BIN worked a treat. Absolutely no colour bleed through what-so-ever. I buy it in the cans and spray about 3 very light coats to get the coverage. It is very runny so you have to be careful! I still have to do our bed, tallboy and 2 bedsides...eventually. I won't paint anything without it. All of my furniture we bought from our old house...most of which is about 15 years old. We had to buy new stuff to fill the extra rooms, but a little bit of elbow grease, paint, drawer pulls and couch covers have worked a treat, and saved heaps of money. Some befores.... What sort of paint did you use for top coat? Re: New house, old furniture 8Mar 26, 2013 6:16 am looks great when we first moved into our old house we had no new furniture and an old milk crate as a stand for tv. this time we have been able to take advantage of some very good sales and have bought furniture and stored them. but we are still putting some of our old furniture in the new house. planning to have a garage sale when we move in . Re: New house, old furniture 9Mar 26, 2013 6:33 am our dream home That looks fantastic so I gather you sanded applied the (primer zinsser bin) then painted ??? What sort of paint did you use for top coat? I washed the pieces first, sanded, sprayed on the Zinsser, then painted 2 coats of top coat with a brush. I used gloss acrylic paint. Since I had gone to all the trouble of using a stain blocker, I didn't want the paint to go yellow had I used enamel. Besides, it takes too long to dry and stinks (although I wouldn't use anything else for archs, skirts and doors around my home!). Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I managed to get some shabby chic frames and items to dress it up looking forward to doing the bed side tables to match. Re: New house, old furniture 11Apr 15, 2013 9:44 pm Hello! I found this thread on google and was going to tell you about another thread where they painted furniture with the Zinnser BIN and then acrylic paint. . .but here is Stormy. . . who did it all on that very same thread! I was actually looking for some info on which paint to use for my timber paneling on the walls. . . I just put in some cheapo pine lining in the pantry and was wondering whether to paint with high-sheen acrylic or aquanamel (as it's such a large area, around 16sqm, I'm not up for painting with oil-based enamel). I have a 4 litre tin of the Zinsser BIN already. . . do I need to prime the pine before I paint? Like you all, we couldn't afford to furnish the house with new furniture when we moved in. . . we didn't get a driveway for 18 months, and it took us 2 years to replace the faded student sofas. I'm glad we had to wait though, as getting a whole new house was overkill enough. . . we didn't get to enjoy our new kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms etc. like you would if you were renovating, as they all came at once. . . but we've really enjoyed slowly getting our new furniture and driveway and landscaping, as it's all come slowly, we've been excited about and enjoyed every one. Old Home Restoration / Renovation Hi, just discovered all these junks left behind under the floor. Could any of these be asbestos? Best to leave as it is or clean up?
