Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 24, 2013 11:49 am Decisions, Decisions, Decisions. Still in the process of working out a floor plan (very nearly there) but looking at the kitchen design we are a bit unsure about appliance placements. We have a bench that we want to be free of everything, another with the sink and the bench top cooktop under the window/window splashback... This doesn't give us any room for an oven tower, (don't want a stand alone cooker) so we were thinking of using the fridge space for the oven tower and putting the fridge in the pantry in the space backing onto the laundry wall (next to the linen, which opens into the laundry). Your though's, ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated... The fridge will also heat up your pantry, which could affect food storage. Re: Fridge in WIP/Scullery - Good or Bad Idea? 3Mar 24, 2013 12:13 pm I would just go for a built in under bench oven under the stove. I wouldn't want free standing either due to the mess factor but built in would be your best option and you can keep the fridge where it is! Re: Fridge in WIP/Scullery - Good or Bad Idea? 4Mar 24, 2013 12:56 pm You won't need any extra ventilation in the pantry for the fridge. Modern ones are designed needing a minimum clearance, as long as you follow those recommendations there won't be a problem. There's no difference having it in the space you suggest in the pantry to having it in a traditional space in the kitchen. The important clearance is around the sides and/or back. Your pantry looks a similar size to a bar or a small kitchen in a flat and they handle fridges pretty easily. Our fridge is in our pantry. There is no noticable extra heat nor any effect on food storage. We have small appliances in there so it makes getting snacks etc easy, and it also keeps DS out of the main kitchen when he's getting a snack and I'm trying to cook. My only other suggestions are to think about a water point for your fridge and, if budget allows, maybe a sink in your pantry. We use ours an enormous amount and that is where dishes drain keeping the main kitchen clear. I wanted the main kitchen to be really clear of any clutter and this set up works well for us. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I think a kitchen looks great when you can't see the fridge. Like Joles, we are also placing small appliances on the bench in the WIP so it's handy to have the fridge in there too. In our current house I'm constantly interrupted by people going to the fridge for a snack or drink whilst I'm trying to cook so I thought long and hard about the traffic flow of my new kitchen. We considered two options one with the fridge in the kitchen the other in the pantry We ended up going with the fridge in the pantry at the end of the bench where the sink is. The other thing we also considered was about whether to have a door on the pantry or not. We ended up deciding to do away with that as well. We are not using the area like a proper butlers pantry which has a sink in it and the door allows you to hide the dirty dishes, ours is just a storage space. We thought about our own habits and realised that even if we put a door on it we would have it open most of the time and the main part of the pantry is hidden behind a wall anyway. The house is nearly finished now and I am glad we did it this way as the extra space on the bench is really good and for us was a much better use of the space. Re: Fridge in WIP/Scullery - Good or Bad Idea? 8Mar 24, 2013 3:08 pm We are having our fridge in the pantry. We're also putting the microwave, mixer, kettle and toaster in there. We have a 1400mm opening which should be enough to let out any heat. Re: Fridge in WIP/Scullery - Good or Bad Idea? 9Mar 24, 2013 5:03 pm I think its a great idea we are planning to have a fridge on wip with drinks milk for making coffee in pantry so main kitchen does get messed ice machine and freezer then a second fridge in gloss black to mactch kitchen with vegetables herbs condiments meats as we have an ice machine and water double frige which does not hold enough I'm a chef and think this work flow will work fine good luck with it Re: Fridge in WIP/Scullery - Good or Bad Idea? 10Mar 24, 2013 5:34 pm Thanks everyone for your great comments.... I was quite concerned about placing the fridge in the WIP but it seems that it is o.k. We will be having a bench under the window (will be putting a blind on it to stop the sun from heating up the pantry too much) so a great place to have kettle, mixer, toaster etc. So I can easily prepare ingredients from the fridge & pantry for meals, milk in the coffee from the fridge and not mess up my nice clean kitchen, great... gives us more bench space near the stove and the oven tower that I am thinking of... Thanks again everyone... Re: Fridge in WIP/Scullery - Good or Bad Idea? 12Mar 24, 2013 7:54 pm Our internal garage door opens near the pantry - so I had a plumbing spot in the garage corner nearest to it - didn't cost much. We have an older fridge that makes ice really well. I figure I'll transfer frozen stuff and grog to it and make the kitchen fridge - also plumbed in - just for day to day and a few drinks. We want the pantry to be just for groceries etc. Re: Fridge in WIP/Scullery - Good or Bad Idea? 13Mar 24, 2013 8:32 pm Going against the majority. I think a fridge in a WIP is a very silly idea. The fridge has got to be THE most used item in the kitchen, I don't want to be going into a pokey little room each time. Imagine kids running back and forth to get drinks and snacks through the pantry door. Creating a bottleneck. And even if it's only ever one person in the kitchen it just seems so awkward to have to go through a doorway to open the fridge, and back into the main kitchen all the time. Also I've been reading about the "triangle" theory of creating the best laid out kitchen where the sink, cooktop and fridge shouldn't be too far from each other. I think having the fridge in the WIP would make an efficient kitchen difficult. Personally I think "Butler's Pantries" are a very faddish idea and don't have very well thought out aspects. E.g. window in the pantry?! Hello heat and light to spoil stored food. Small appliances being used in there - crumbs/odours/grease spatters in a confined space amongst all the stored goods. Sink in pantry to "hide" dirty plates - who wants to stand in a little room away from everything to do the washing up?! Hilarious. We'll be having a WIP but it will be just that - a pantry, for storage. Anyhoo, that's my two cents. To have dirty and washed dishes at the pantry sink works well so that the kitchen sink is clear for prep. Not sure what exactly is hilarious about that. Our fridge in the pantry is actually closer to the oven and the main sink than it would have been if left in the original position. Butler's pantries might be faddish, but then so is everything in house design. It's constantly evolving. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Fridge in WIP/Scullery - Good or Bad Idea? 15Mar 25, 2013 12:31 am Add me to the very silly list! We are having two fridges, Dishwasher and sink in our pantry, prob the toaster and kettle as well. Two open shelves for Canisters and food storage, and two rows of cutlery drawers. Should have made it bigger it will be used more than the real kitchen! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v136/ricsbride/kitchen_zpsa79bca1c.png Re: Fridge in WIP/Scullery - Good or Bad Idea? 16Mar 25, 2013 3:25 am you have a big pantry donna . love it . that is the only thing i did not get in our pantry was a sink now wondering if i should have. I think having the fridge in the WIP would make an efficient kitchen difficult. We must have read the same book that mentions the triangle theory. My dishwasher, sink , oven, fridge & pantry (within the scullery) all sit within the triangle. So as I cook, I am clearing away things, washing things, stacking dishwasher. I bake a lot and cook a lot, and find it flows well. I would be driven crazy having to walk to get essentials out of the fridge, then walk back to the bench to make a sandwich, then put it all back again, and also not good for traffic flow. I have a scullery, a bank of cupboards, a row of overhead cupboards and a bench, under the bench is room for a bar fridge which will hold additional drinks and food when we are entertaining, but that is it. I like a big pantry - no windows ... ... - and find it a good place for the red wine - bottom - floor. Keeps it fairly cool. I wouldn't make coffee etc in there but some might and have a sink. I have the spare fridge in the garage - grog etc. Works well. Re: Fridge in WIP/Scullery - Good or Bad Idea? 19Mar 25, 2013 7:15 am We are trying to work out if we will be able to squeeze a second fridge into the WIP, but we have the normal one in the kitchen. Our current fridge when we move into the new house will be our beer fridge, which is usually housed in the garage, but as the house is 27m long, DH is complaining about his legs and how far he will have to walk.
