Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 20, 2013 11:29 am Hello (first time builder here) There are single robes (with swinging doors) in the plan we are looking at. Ideally I'd like double robes with sliding doors. Am I best to have the robes taken out of the plan completely so it is a shell of a room - then get a robe company to build the robe after the build? ....... or have the builder put in double robes with sliding doors? (I am in WA). Thank you - I appreciate any guidance. Re: Robes - leave them in or sub contract after hand over 2Mar 20, 2013 11:46 am i am having the wardrobe left as a shell and getting them in after handover only because during the build i noticed they were going to be swinging doors. i would check with the builder and get costing as it may be cheaper for the builder to do it Re: Robes - leave them in or sub contract after hand over 3Mar 20, 2013 3:40 pm We had the same plan but we decided to leave the wardrobe as is (which was very basic) and over time (2 years) decide what we exactly wanted and I ended up installing exactly what we wanted. I ended up building a robe for about $250 of which a robe installed by professionals could rip it out and install a new one for $450. At least doing in myself would I know it was done properly. You should ask your builder though. I would doubt you get a bucket of money back and I can only guess it'll cost much more to build something better. Re: Robes - leave them in or sub contract after hand over 4Mar 20, 2013 4:34 pm The builder will be offering single robes with swinging doors because their carpenter should be able to do it all and will be cost effective for them because the doors will be bought in bulk. If it's done by a carpenter, shelves etc will more than likely be very basic. Sliding double robe doors would need to be produced by a specialist company (probably made to measure). You could get the builder to build the robe frame and have the sliding doors installed after handover. This would result in a 'cleaner' look because the plastering etc would be done to match the room. You may not get much money back if you delete the robes completely and they may even charge you for the pleasure of removing them given they have pre-fab framing and will need to customise what they deliver to your site. Depends entirely on the builder and how they like to make their money. The best bet is to ask the builder for a cost to change the robes to what you want. It's a common request to 'upgrade' to sliding doors. Get a costing for the size increase and door change and then you will at least know how much you need to compare against for getting them done afterwards. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. Ask for the cost of upgrading. Most builders will do it just depends on the slave available and what they charge. You might find it isn't very expensive, getting someone out later to convert them might cost more. Changing from doors to sliders after the build is possible but won't look as good as they put a new frame inside the old one. (the joys of double brick houses!)
