Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 19, 2013 9:41 pm Strange question I know, but is 1.6m cut and 1.6m fill over the slab for a house a lot? (Slopes down away from the road). I don't really mean cost wise, more how the house will look in the end - will the front of the house look really low down and the back stick up high over the back yard?? I am finding it difficult to visualise and worry it's not the right thing to do.... Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Is 1.6 m cut/ 1.6m fill a lot?? 2Mar 20, 2013 5:13 am I know my contract stated it included upto 1.5 mtr cut/fill so 1.6 in that aspect doesn't sound much. The fall on my block from back to front was about 1 mtr. Basicly a 1.6 mtr fall on your block will prob only equate to less than 1mtr cut depending how big your house/block is. EmyN will the front of the house look really low down and the back stick up high over the back yard?? They will build cut soil from the back of your block and use it to build up the front until they level it off. Here is a pic of my block with the slab .. mine has been cut at rear and filled at front with a block with about 1mtr fall. Hope that gives you some idea. I think that 1.6m cut and fill is too big. The block when we bought it had a driveway. We fenced the front and put a gate in. This was the gate before the cut Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is the driveway now we have had the cut Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The driveway has not been cut 700mm, it has been cut less so there is still a slope going towards the house You can see on the left hand side of the photo where the grass is how much has had to be cut out Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ That is the side of the fill - not quite at the 700mm height, and we are already up to the bottom of the neighbours windows Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ That is the fill mound that we have at the back of the house Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is about 1.5m high as we extended the pad further so we didnt have a 700mm drop off the back of the house. If it is possible I would try and think of different options in order to not have that large cut and fill. Lourance I think you misunderstood me. It's 1.6m cut and 1.6 m fill. The slope over our building pad (albeit a very large single storey) is roughly 3m. Jenn I'm curious why do you say you think it's too much? The back of your house is filled 1.5m high above the backyard did you say? And it doesn't look unuseable as a backyard... Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Is 1.6 m cut/ 1.6m fill a lot?? 5Apr 14, 2013 6:02 pm our house we are building is a cut and fill you can see pics of our house on my building thread it is split level but from the outside looks like one level it sits high on the block as we have the slope going up. i have lots of pics showing how much dirt has been used and alot was take away as well. also how the back of the house is with the cut out so h it may give you an idea of what your may look like i am sure it will be fine . Re: Is 1.6 m cut/ 1.6m fill a lot?? 6Apr 14, 2013 6:11 pm Thanks rocky! I had a quick look through your lovely thread - I couldn't see anywhere how much cut and fill you had? Would be great to know for comparison. Your house looks great. Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Is 1.6 m cut/ 1.6m fill a lot?? 7Apr 14, 2013 6:58 pm I dont think so. The key question is will it work on your block? Our house pad cut and fill is about 1.8m / 1.8m disgonally. It gives us the benefit of elevation at the front where we have views. We will need to do alot of retaining walls after handover though which all adds to cost. Heaps of pics in my thread. I had a 1.6 m cut go down to 400 on one corner/side which you can see in my pic. This has resulted in a diagonal cut across the front of our block too. We have a 1.8m fill at the back opposite corner. The lay of our land is through the middle on a diagonal. The drama with our block is that that fill stops because we have a 3m easement at the back so there is no fill over that area so we have a big drop. It is basically useless in the backyard on that side. If you have a 1.6m cut with it being front to backer back to front and it levels out your block right to the boundaries it won't be a problem. As long as you can retain and lift at fences or can batter the front yard for landscaping. It will be like having a flat block for the rest. Re: Is 1.6 m cut/ 1.6m fill a lot?? 9Apr 14, 2013 7:22 pm Our house is 1.2mts down at the front & 900mm up at the back. We have 2mts falling away from the road over 50mts. I don't know how to add pics on here, but the main thing we need to be concerned with is drainage. I think 1.6m is fine Feel free to follow our build! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59958 Re: Is 1.6 m cut/ 1.6m fill a lot?? 13Apr 15, 2013 10:37 am Most builders have a 3m limit and won't touch anything over that. It will cost you a lot in site costs, you may want to look at a split-level home. You also need to check your council's regs, for instance Maitland Council has a restriction of 900 cut/700 fill. PM me your email. I have a build excavation calculator you can use based on your plans to double check what your builder is telling you.
