Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 11, 2013 11:35 pm Hello all, We recently did pre-start and have some options which we have to choose from, and I am finding the decision-making process a bit difficult and hoped you might be able to use your experiences to help! Decision 1 - front door - we have chosen the Corinthian Slimlite PSLM 208. It's just a single door, 920mm wide. I can't decide whether to have clear or translucent glass. My natural instinct is clear, but from a security point of view I'm concerned about people being able to peer in through the glass slits. My husband also likes clear, but is leaving it to me to make the decision - he doesn't know me at all, haha! Does anyone have this door in clear glass and how do they feel about it? Decision 2 - we're having double doors on the theatre (which will be a library). My husband is pushing the option of having sliding doors (just the standard type, not the ones that slide into the wall). I'm not sure whether they will be too heavy. He reckons that they can be adjusted so that they slide easily - does anyone know if that's true/have any experience with sliding doors? I want them to be glass. Decision 3 - do people usually have the kickboard under their vanities in their floor tile and then the skirting in the wall tile? I've just read our print-out and that's what we have. I have no recollection of saying we wanted the kickboard in the floor tile, although husband says we did. Our en suite has a black floor, white walls, black stripe in the shower and in the middle of the two sinks, with a black bench top and white cupboards, and i'm not sure if a black kickboard will look right. Does anyone have this colour scheme? You may be thinking "This woman doesn't trust her husband!" It's not that, it's just that we sometime have different taste, and I have a hard time picturing things, and also he has left the final decisions to me - he knows how to keep me awake at night!! Thanks a lot in advance for your help. Re: Please could I have some decision-making help? Thanks! 2Mar 12, 2013 7:15 am Hi there, yes the decision making process is hard, especially as there is so much choice these.days. For the front door, we are having translucent glass as I didn't like the fact that anyone at the front door could look right into our house. Also a security thing for me, so no one can see if we are home or not. But that is my personal choice. As for the sliding doors, I've not seen them on the outside, only cavity sliding doors. My parents have glass sliding doors from the 60's when the their house was built and they are a bit heavy but work and look fine. Maybe go to doors plus and ask their opinion about the doors. As for the kickboard, our old house had the same colour of the vanity but I think the same colour as the tile would look good too. Good luck with your decisions We built the Wisdom Majestic 40 - moved in! Thanks! 3Mar 12, 2013 8:11 am for the front door we are going clear we have a pivot door sunburst. you could go clear especially if you are getting a flyscreen door. in the media room sonething like this or similar would be nice Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ i would have loved the double doors unfortunately i missed and have a single in cavity slider i think the same color as the floor tiles would be ok. but that is something i had not thought about our bathroom is very similar we are having the black tiles on the floor a black tile feature wall and all the rest white tile walls (all floor to ceiling) in the vanity night sky ceasar stone and the white cupboards when the vanity is installed i will have a look. know how it is hubby has also said easier for me to choose Re: Please could I have some decision-making help? Thanks! 4Mar 12, 2013 9:14 am Thanks onewheel and 1rocky. Ooh, that door is nice! Not sure what's going on at the top with that rail - makes it look like a curtain! But love the Japanese feel of it. Our doors will be all white. I did envisage it as this style though, i.e. with the squares of glass, but I don't know if we can have that type. Might find out (what we have quoted is the one big long panel of glass). PS: what is a pivot door?? It's all so hard, argh! Re: Please could I have some decision-making help? Thanks! 5Mar 12, 2013 9:23 am We have a 1020mm wide front door that is clear glass. Our front entrance is a double height void with a staircase, so any visitors will not be able to see much anyway as we will have a scree. Door as well. Our house is set 30m back from the road, so I am not worried about privacy with the front door Our theatre room has double cavity sliders that go back into the wall. I love the doors that rocky put up. Google pivot door - it is a different type of hinge than a normal door hinge. Usually they have pivot doors when you get to 1200mm wide Modified Fernside 38 Rawson Homes Blog: http://www.thehousethatmatandjenbuilt.blogspot.com Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60501 Re: Please could I have some decision-making help? Thanks! 6Mar 12, 2013 10:53 am I think it all depends on the location of your door and the orientation to the street. If the door is dead on the front/middle of your house and a high traffic street - I'd probably go translucent glass. Mine is set back to the back of the garage and I'm in a quiet street so I went with a 2700*1200 pivot with clear glass. I'm not really fussed if people can see in if they actually come to the door. I have twin cavity sliders on my media room but don't have the second floor frame up yet so can't comment on the functionality. The doors posted above are expensive but it sounds like you have something expensive included to start with! Hope this helps. Re: Please could I have some decision-making help? Thanks! 7Mar 13, 2013 12:33 am Thanks everyone. Food for thought. I had almost decided on clear glass front door (they're only slits anyway), as we have about 9m between the door and the living area, but then something onewheel said made me think about people being able to see us walking about indoors! We don't have a lot of expensive things included travisaus, we're just paying for a lot of extras! The front door is extra - extra because it's not the standard size and extra because it's glass, and the double doors on the theatre are extra, whatever type of doors we go for. We're building with Redink, who I'm very happy with so far, except for the fact that I feel like some of their standard stuff isn't that great looking. Probably good quality though. I guess that's where builders make their money... although I have to say Redink's charges for extras do on the whole seem quite fair... Would like to see your bathroom when it's done 1rocky. How far along are you? We don't even have our titles yet!! Redink have been good and taken us as far along as they can, so that when we do get our titles (for which we've been waiting more than a year!) they can jump straight in and start building. Re: Please could I have some decision-making help? Thanks! 8Mar 13, 2013 6:46 am we have tiles in the bathrooms and vanities no bath yet being freestanding it will come at a later date. but yesterday we had stairs installed no ore bricks to get to different levels now hoping the laundry steps are in soon so i can visit the laundry on our build thread i have lots of pics and you can also see the front door we are having it is a Corinthian sunburst pivot like jen has said A pivot door rotates on two metal pivots at the top and bottom of the door. This allows the door to be open out and in. The door is usually fitted with an concealed overhead closer which allows the door to be set open at different positions. they are more expensive then normal doors and much larger. good to do research now while you are waiting for titles . we did alot of research which how we came across the black and white bath tub for the main bathroom and also the double stainless steel butlers sink for the kitchen* our builder has told us the sink is huge i have only ever seen it in pics ) check with your builder as you maybe able to supply some of your own items like taps light fitting ( we supplied our own light switches etc) 6 7974 Hi VK, I am now retired however I have stood beside over 300 owner builders in the past 18 years that have successfully built their own homes. First of all a building… 10 18974 Thank you so much for the effort. We will use it to talk with builder. We also had idea of building duplex instead and seeking suggest ions. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=106744 11 10742 |
