Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 07, 2013 7:18 am does it cost much to upgrade your fridge space? the fridge space on the master plans says 1000mm but the new fridge we are looking at buying is 1000mm wide so obviously the fridge space will need to be bigger. Re: fridge space 2Mar 07, 2013 8:19 am your fridge should slide in but if you are looking at shaving about 20mm or so from your cupboards it should not cost that much but it would be up to your builder to decide how much they would charge. also if your are into building stage the builder can charge a building variation fee Re: fridge space 3Mar 07, 2013 8:48 am thanks for the reply, we are not at building stage yet. have colour selections in just under 2 weeks so need to tell them at selection appt that we need to make fridge space bigger. Re: fridge space 4Mar 07, 2013 8:57 am that is the best time to ask and when you get plans back just double check to make sure they ave done this also make sure you have it in writing very important as if it is not done during construction and you have no written prove you really cannot do much about it Re: fridge space 5Mar 07, 2013 9:52 am Remember - measurements on your plans are typically frame sizes, not the finished walls. So if your plans say the cavity is 1000mm wide, this is the distance between frame on one side and frame on the other. The finished cavity width will be less once the plaster has been fixed. Also, don't forget you may also having skirting going into the cavity, so allow for that too. As a precaution, allow 30mm each side for plaster and skirting when specifying cavity widt as well as any clearance around the sides of the fridge that is specified by the manufacturer. I have assumed you are east coast where most homes are timber frame, however it should be similar for double-brick as you still have to allow for grey render and plaster set over the internal bricks (plus skirting!) Re: fridge space 6Mar 07, 2013 11:49 am thanks for the info 1rocky and OurLindrum52. it says on our appt sheet form builder to bring measurements of fridge (for them to work around i guess.) have written it on there, just thought someone might know what an approximate cost would be. we are in SA. Re: fridge space 7Mar 07, 2013 2:17 pm I would expect your builder NOT to charge you for increasing the fridge space, as there's no additonal materials or work required. I checked our variations and where we asked for the fridge pace to be increased to 1050mm we also asked for a cupboard above and the cost was $625, so I would expect thsi to be cost of cupboard only. On the other hand, if this meant increasing the fridge space resulted in other apsects of your kitchen changing, then they may charge you. If your fridge space only had to increase by 50mm - 100mm, and nothing else changes, I don't see that costing anything. Re: fridge space 8Mar 07, 2013 2:49 pm sorry could not help with cost as ours was already the size we wanted and the builder added the overheads for no charge Re: fridge space 10Mar 22, 2013 7:07 am OurLindrum52 Remember - measurements on your plans are typically frame sizes, not the finished walls. Yep - 1m on plan might turn out to be 970mm max "real space". Depth also is an issue - people often forget the doors measurement and they often aren't included. Can add 30-50mm - especially on those double door fridges.. Re: fridge space 11Mar 22, 2013 11:14 am We didn't get charged to make bigger. We made the space 1200mm so i would think that would be pleanty big enough. Re: fridge space 13Aug 26, 2013 7:11 pm Travis what is your fridge?? We're looking to make our fridge space big enough for the largest side by sides and French doors on the market as we'll only be upgrading the fridge in a couple of years time and don't know the exact model. The biggest width I've found is 1m! Re: fridge space 14Aug 26, 2013 9:04 pm The widest I found was a Westinghouse which is 1m wide. You need 5mm each side so the space needs to be 101cm to fit it! I was not happy as our space ended up 1cm too narrow! Re: fridge space 15Aug 27, 2013 2:46 am Remember to consider fridge depth as well. Alot of the fridges require 90cm+ depth. We've opted to leave all our fridge and microwave spaces as standard. And our fridge depth is 60cm on the plan. Im having troubles finding a 90cm wide x 60cm deep fridge now -.- Re: fridge space 17Aug 27, 2013 10:33 am We had our fridge "plumbed" in. It was quite large but a minor change was very cheap - especially the plumbing bit. We also had the tap and power point placed in a little alcove behind the fridge - ie about the size of 2 or 3 bricks - but inside the wall. - if that makes sense. We could then push the fridge right in - and allow for door opening at the front. I had a similar issue with my fridge not too long ago. It wasn't the same model, but the symptoms were pretty much the same: the compressor would start and then stop… 3 5179 You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want.
