Re: Classic style weatherboard Melb - front landscaping 1 yr 843Jul 25, 2017 3:13 pm Thank you both. It's getting there! We had the council plant new nature strip trees yesterday (finally) after moron kids kicked them down on NYE. That was so annoying as ours was a good 7-8 years established. These ones are staked so I hope they won't be targeted. :/ My Hamptons build (completed): viewtopic.php?f=31&t=63370 Moved in Wednesday 11th Dec 2013 Front landscaping completed June 2016 Re: Classic style weatherboard Melb - front landscaping 1 yr 844Dec 04, 2017 10:40 am Hi again everyone, We (when I say we, I mean I!) have put together a concept idea for the backyard. I designed it in some software I found online. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Obviously this is a 2D plan, anything 3D is beyond me! But just imagine the brown deck (which is already existing) as being roughly 2.5m off the ground - on the right side are the stairs down to ground level. So, the reason there is another deck/pergola down the bottom is because due to orientation of the block, our current deck rarely gets sun until Summer when it gets some early morning and some late afternoon sun (and also the house shadows it at other times). We want more sun! So that's the idea of the 2nd deck which will have some sort of climber grown over it to provide filtered light. We are essentially starting with a blank canvas, except the bottom retaining wall is already in place. This will leave roughly an 0.5m step up once you hit the concrete path: So yeah the new paved area is going to cut into the retaining wall - this is the only image I could find that half looks like it but it'll be with brick not timber, and paved: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ But our fall is only 0.5m if you can visualise that. Just warning you guys, this won't be done all in one hit as the front yard was. At this stage, just looking to start on the first stage. First stage (irrigation, soil prep, fences painted 'monument', front and right side screening trees, brick retaining wall with capping & steps (all a bit up in the air currently). The digging started today but was promptly abandoned due to the weather. I shudder to post a photo as it looks an awful mess currently! Your garden plans look beautiful. Very clever to use the software to draft it all up. I look forward to watching the progress picks as you get stuck in. WoF Re: Classic style weatherboard Melb - back landscaping stage 846Dec 16, 2017 3:30 pm Hi WoH - you don't have to apologise! You have your own stuff going on! Very exciting for you! Thank you. Here's some progress of stage 1: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Bit out of order, sorry. So the Laurels are planted down the back, and the Hornbeams are up the side. Really please with that. Retaining wall and steps are being finished off Monday and Tuesday, and Wednesday/Thursday turf will be laid. So there will just be a gravel rectangle with the proposed deck is going to slot in, that will do in the meantime. Glad to see they covered your lovely driveway in something before bringing in the digger, that would have done some damage otherwise. The trees out the front look be doing very well. Were they the ornamental pears? In the US after moving out of the house, we should actually get to start our build in Feb now..... a long time in the making but we have progress! Hope you have time to enjoy a lovely Christmas with your family. Re: Classic style weatherboard Melb - back landscaping stage 848Jan 21, 2020 11:55 am Sorry WoH, over 2 years late! Yes they are ornamental pears, Cleveland as well as Capital. The front is more formal whilst the back is cottagey and less structured. We still need to get the pergola finished, we just had to get the posts put in at paving time. Always something! Anyway, we got solar panels done in the past week which has somewhat diminished the aesthetics of the house - but, it'll save us on electricity. I put my foot down and requested none on the side you 'see' as you drive down our street. The way I put it, I didn't build my dream house to have it ruined, lol. What else ... did our theatre room over Covid, which is amazing to have. Love it! Garden has matured, lost a few things but know what's hardy. It's a fair bit of work though!
