Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 18, 2008 9:24 pm Ohh such a tough week this week.
Received a call from my sister to say that the house next door to her is up for sale. My sister lives with her husband and two georgous children and next door to my mum, dad and brother. We are a close family and I have the type of family you CAN live with and would actually WANT to. I am receiving enourmous pressure from all members of the family to buy it but I am so emotionally attached to the idea of our MW estate home but would absolutely love to be with the whole family again. The house is not nice but we can do a reno on it, the area promises that you'll always get return on investment but can I pass up a new house, lake-side views in peaceful estate not that far out of town... My head has been spinning all week. Dave's too. Neither of us have a firm decision to go either way and both of us like both scenario's but we have to make a decision. We are at least not tied into a building contract but have signed the land contract and I spoke to MW and we can on-sell the land but I have to have a more indepth conversation then ensure we don't loose too much/any to sell. Sometimes I wish the house didn't go on the market but then maybe it has for us.. oh dear.. I'm trying to make the right decision and I know it would be awesome for all of us to be with my family for all the extra contact, chelly can go to school in a few years with her cousin's. When I'm on maternity leave with bub 2 one day, I'll have company and support. For Dave he is close to work and has the mateship of my dad and family. So it sounds like its clear but we love the house we chose for us to build in our new estate as our family home to live in for the next like 20 years. If we do buy the house with my family, its also an extension to get the size we want, full renovation and s#@tload of money and work. I just want a decision made so I can get focussed on either plan but I can't see where my heart is when I am so emotionally attached to both. Any thoughts or other points I can consider? You will know what you want, but renovating is hard work……also so is building a new home, lots of down sides there as well. This is a very personal thing; I think you know what you would like best!!!???? Its really not that far, prob only 20mins. Thanks Michelle, I do know you are right and I know there's not a lot anyone can say - this is just so tough for me. That way if you ever change your mind its there. Its the priceless moments that happen outside of 'arranged visits' that he has with my sis fam that he feels I miss out on.
I wish the right answer was more clear, I mean I can see that I want to be with the family but I am on such an exciting road doing things on my own that might be better for us too. The best part about it all, is there is no bad outcome.. both positive, but fear of regretting the other decision. Unforunately the house is already too expensive for us that's why mum and dad have offered quarter share to ensure we get in... In this respect you're lucky...I couldn't imagine living next door to my mother or the in-law...way to interfering. Probably doesn't help in a decision but I guess it's a silver lining. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Stuck in a predicament - do we sell or keep our land? 11Apr 18, 2008 9:57 pm Lea Wrote: Quote: we can on-sell the land but I have to have a more indepth conversation then ensure we don't loose too much/any to sell. If it makes you feel any better we are in stage one, even before the title release was official we had offers of upto $60k more than we paid for the block. It went to $80k above once title was released. Our block is the last block on the right (that is released anyway) before the wetlands.... So..... Don't worry about losing any money, because that will not happen IMHO... I can't guarantee those sorts of figures again but...... Who knows.. As others have said, follow your heart and if that keeps you guys in MW... Who knows they might all sell and come be with you guys....... Just looked up your block - we are pretty close - we are on Marriott Blvd but at the other end. You got a real nice block - congrats!
Thanks for the info too - appreciate your reply. But family moments shared will last forever.
Paul Re: Stuck in a predicament - do we sell or keep our land? 16Apr 19, 2008 9:12 am I would move next to to your family, renovating is fun too. Re: Stuck in a predicament - do we sell or keep our land? 17Apr 19, 2008 9:25 am Judie A house is a building: family is family. You can always build later, but you can never replace family moments and support. youre very lucky to have such a close loving family unit and your children etc what a wonderful environment you can put your family to work renovating too LOL but either is good so do what you feel is right for you 20mns isnt far is thats what you choose Re: Stuck in a predicament - do we sell or keep our land? 19Apr 19, 2008 1:20 pm Something that hasn't been discussed, but this sounds like you (your family) would own three blocks next to one another in a good area?
Sounds like a definitely attractive option to me - you never know what the future will bring, but having title to this sort of space is an opportunity that doesn't come along very often. Cheers, Earl Re: Stuck in a predicament - do we sell or keep our land? 20Apr 19, 2008 10:43 pm We are just about to build a home next door to my in-laws and I can't wait. I really look forward to my babies (currently almost 3yo & almost 1yo) being able to walk into their grandparents at any time of the day for a visit!! Plus we will own another two houses out the front - which we have offered one to my parents so we would be surrounded by family (and my sister lives literally 500m up the road as well).
I would choose family over the travelling any day - we too are extremely close to both of our families and they will always come first. Use a product like Equisol's Vitalise to clean the deck then coat with a penetrating timber oil. It will look 10 years younger and add value to your home.
