Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 01, 2013 7:09 pm Hello: I'm building with clarendon Finally had my tender meeting today. Everything looking great, Just got two questions My rain water tank is $9000, do you always have to pay on top of building price, and is it always so expensive? I have been told that the gas, electricity and Telstra are more than 6 meter from my house, so I have to pay nearly $2000 for connection. is this always the case? Please share your expirence Re: Building with clarendon, tender meeting rise two questio 2Mar 01, 2013 7:23 pm our rainwater tank was priced in the tender but did not cost that much. telstra and electricity all included in building price for us Re: Building with clarendon, tender meeting rise two questio 3Mar 02, 2013 7:31 am We upgraded to a 3000 L slimline water tank and it was $1300, nothing extra for electricity connection, we have a 4m council section and then our house is positioned 5.5m back from this ... 9.5m from kerb. Re: Building with clarendon, tender meeting rise two questio 4Mar 02, 2013 9:45 am Thank you for all your reply, my gas water and telstra connection is around 10 meters, really not sure if it a standard charge. Re: Building with clarendon, tender meeting rise two questio 5Mar 02, 2013 1:17 pm Not sure about the connection thing, but we are paying about $8k for our water tank. The reason it's so expensive is that it includes a concrete slab for it, the pump, as well as connecting it to toilet, laundry and garden taps. The rainwater tank itself would only be around $1-2k, but everything else you need to be able to use it adds up. Keep in mind that rainwater tanks are no longer required by law in QLD (although I'm not sure if different councils may still require them), so maybe keep that in mind. Might be worth just skipping the tank at that price. Re: Building with clarendon, tender meeting rise two questio 7Mar 02, 2013 8:38 pm My electricity and power was 15 metres away from my block and we had to pay $1k extra 2 Re: Building with clarendon, tender meeting rise two questio 8Mar 03, 2013 7:09 pm mikemlmichael Hello: I'm building with clarendon My rain water tank is $9000, do you always have to pay on top of building price, and is it always so expensive? People get ripped off big time when they have to install a rainwater tank as part of their building requirement but yours sounds way over the top!!! To have a more accurate idea, you need to disclose your area (for regulations), the tank type and size and the house roof area (for regulatory rainwater harvesting requirements) and the number of fixtures being plumbed to. What are they supplying in way of fittings apart from the slab? Include make and model of pump etc. Another problem is that a hefty price does not guarantee a quality install. Nearly all of the installs I see are sub standard and many are not compliant. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. I currently work within the roof drainage and rainwater harvesting industry and I see a lot of very poor workmanship, non compliance and bad design. I feel really sorry for the people I deal with as most have also been ripped off. One of my clients was recently sold a pressure pump and an automatic mains water switching device for over $1,200 because he wanted to connect his water tank pressure pump to a toilet and an outside tap (established home). All he actually needed was two cistern valves for the rainwater pipe connection, a $200 pump and an 18mm garden hose to reduce friction loss. With the tank, I can't see why homeowners don't arrange this themselves. Obviously paper work has to be submitted for approval but this should be a minor matter. A couple of years ago, I had a person in NSW contact me wanting me to design a system for his new house and later on I was asked to supply a letter explaining my hydraulic calculations to the council because they couldn't understand how it worked! I did that and later supplied all the fittings and so I know that he at least was able to arrange everything himself and end up with a superior system at a big cost saving. If I couldn't show you how to have a system installed that was way better than anything you would have had otherwise and not be able to do it for less than half of the $9,000 Clarendon wants to charge you, then I would give the game away. Here are a couple of threads that might interest you. One deals with the subject of builders charging for unnecessary expensive rainwater harvesting fittings and the other deals with a forum member being charged for a large water tank pressure pump only to have a plumber STUPIDLY fit small diameter pipes that choked the flow rate. These are just two common things to be aware of that happen all the time. viewtopic.php?f=35&t=61491 viewtopic.php?f=35&t=61588 3in1 Supadiverta. Perhaps they just assume small/standard allowance for fencing in their standard pricing and hit you up for extra if your site is large. SaveH2o, thank you for the information and links, it was very helpful, I wish I can have you as my builder. Have to work hard to bring down those outrages price. Re: Building with clarendon, tender meeting rise two questio 13Mar 25, 2013 1:26 pm My rain water tank cost in contract tender is $9700 for up to 5000L...i think it's outrageously priced but i thought this was the norm...i was trusting Clarendon to do the right thing by it's clients. Re: Building with clarendon, tender meeting rise two questio 15Mar 31, 2013 3:04 pm mrsg80 The cost is more for the plumbing that goes along with the water tank. Ours was $10,000 for a 2 storey house. Outrageous! The builders have their clients captive as they know that most clients do not have the industry knowledge needed to challenge the pricing or the suitability of the equipment supplied. The mark ups keep getting bigger and bigger on this gravy train yet most installs I see are rarely up to standard. The very recent thread linked below is a water tank install that was found to have a few common problems but it is by no means in the worst category. It might be of interest to some. The house is 2 yo. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=63518&p=994789#p994789 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Cleaner Neater Smarter Cheaper Supa Gutter Pumper.
