I currently work within the roof drainage and rainwater harvesting industry and I see a lot of very poor workmanship, non compliance and bad design. I feel really sorry for the people I deal with as most have also been ripped off. One of my clients was recently sold a pressure pump and an automatic mains water switching device for over $1,200 because he wanted to connect his water tank pressure pump to a toilet and an outside tap (established home). All he actually needed was two cistern valves for the rainwater pipe connection, a $200 pump and an 18mm garden hose to reduce friction loss. With the tank, I can't see why homeowners don't arrange this themselves. Obviously paper work has to be submitted for approval but this should be a minor matter. A couple of years ago, I had a person in NSW contact me wanting me to design a system for his new house and later on I was asked to supply a letter explaining my hydraulic calculations to the council because they couldn't understand how it worked! I did that and later supplied all the fittings and so I know that he at least was able to arrange everything himself and end up with a superior system at a big cost saving. If I couldn't show you how to have a system installed that was way better than anything you would have had otherwise and not be able to do it for less than half of the $9,000 Clarendon wants to charge you, then I would give the game away. Here are a couple of threads that might interest you. One deals with the subject of builders charging for unnecessary expensive rainwater harvesting fittings and the other deals with a forum member being charged for a large water tank pressure pump only to have a plumber STUPIDLY fit small diameter pipes that choked the flow rate. These are just two common things to be aware of that happen all the time. viewtopic.php?f=35&t=61491 viewtopic.php?f=35&t=61588 3in1 Supadiverta. Perhaps they just assume small/standard allowance for fencing in their standard pricing and hit you up for extra if your site is large. SaveH2o, thank you for the information and links, it was very helpful, I wish I can have you as my builder. Have to work hard to bring down those outrages price. Re: Building with clarendon, tender meeting rise two questio 13Mar 25, 2013 12:26 pm My rain water tank cost in contract tender is $9700 for up to 5000L...i think it's outrageously priced but i thought this was the norm...i was trusting Clarendon to do the right thing by it's clients. Re: Building with clarendon, tender meeting rise two questio 15Mar 31, 2013 2:04 pm mrsg80 The cost is more for the plumbing that goes along with the water tank. Ours was $10,000 for a 2 storey house. Outrageous! The builders have their clients captive as they know that most clients do not have the industry knowledge needed to challenge the pricing or the suitability of the equipment supplied. The mark ups keep getting bigger and bigger on this gravy train yet most installs I see are rarely up to standard. The very recent thread linked below is a water tank install that was found to have a few common problems but it is by no means in the worst category. It might be of interest to some. The house is 2 yo. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=63518&p=994789#p994789 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Cleaner Neater Smarter Cheaper Supa Gutter Pumper.
