Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 28, 2013 10:22 am Hi Guys, We are about to start building our house and have been deciding on what type of flooring we want to go. After a couple of months of looking into different types of floors and different options we have decided on Tassie Oak Hardwood 108x12 in a utitlty/feature grade as we like the look of the colour variations and natural features in the wood. The next option we have to decide on is how we want to have it installed. I have talked to a couple of floorers who have suggest 2 methods, either direct stick onto the slab or lay a 12mm ply and the attached to this. The direct stick option will save me a bit of money but I dont want to just save money if it will lead to problems down the track. One of the benefits with the direct stick is that the height will be similar to the carpet we are installing in the bedrooms and 2nd living which will mean the levels of the skirting can remain the same height. I have been told that direct stick will lead to the boards becoming unstuck down the track but others have said if it is sealed correctly and laid right there is no difference between the 2 methods. So my question is what method would you recommend and why? I am now leaning towards option 1 (direct stick) due to the cost savings and similar levels to other flooring we have. Thanks, Trav Re: Floorboard options - Direct stick or Ply 2Feb 28, 2013 1:25 pm Hi there, we had the same options presented to us when we built a couple of years ago. Our builder wanted to do direct stick on slab while I preferred the ply underlay. In the end we went with the ply underlay which I am happy with. All our floor levels are even from tiles in the bathrooms to carpeted areas and I feel we got a better result. I also like the idea of having a barrier between the concrete slab and the flooring...helps with warmer floor temperatures and I believe is not as hard under your feet. We went with 14mm ply under 12mm solid spotted gum. Hope this helps and good luck with your build. Re: Floorboard options - Direct stick or Ply 3Feb 28, 2013 2:55 pm Thanks Radiuz! We had always thought we'd need to go the ply but with a few of the floorers suggesting direct stick I thought i'd exlore it a bit further before I dismissed it. I have also heard that direct stick can leave that hollow sound where as the ply option makes it feel more solid. I'm sure both options are fine but believe I will be more comfortable going with the ply. appreciate the feedback. Thanks Simon, I guess I'm no concerned with the volume of the noise rather that dead and hollow sound and feel that is associated with floating floors. But I'm not sure… 3 6085 Joe Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. If you haven't sorted this already you need to caulk this gap. Not sure where you are but if you are in Sydney I can… 5 4324 Hey guys, what’s everyone opinion on James Hardie linea direct fix to frame? Would this be the most common method and anybody ever had any problems down the track? 0 5111 |
