Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 20, 2013 12:17 pm So I am probably getting ahead of myself here but I am pretty excited because today is the day that we are signing our land contract so naturally, I am very excited so thought it was time to start my own thread. I have been reading this forum for hours at a time for months getting information from you all. We are a young couple living in the northern suburbs of Adelaide and have just purchased a glorious 1200m2 in Mallala, South Australia. The house that goes on this land will be our very first home.
My fiancee had always wanted to buy an established house as land sizes are just getting smaller and smaller these days and he wanted a big piece because he loves his gardening. Last year we thought we would take advantage of the house price slump and get onto buying our own home. After searching and searching and not finding what we wanted within a budget that would allow me to keep working part-time I started looking into land as personally I had always wanted to build. I came across this beautiful piece at Mallala and thought "wow being a bit more country so to speak would be a great place to raise our kids". My fiancee grew up in rural areas around South Australia and has always wanted to live more rural again so straight away he was in agreeance and that is where our building plan started. So finally after months of researching builders, encumbrances, making sure it fits in the budget, the general area of Mallala such as schools, childcare and all the things you do we have finally decided we feel comfortable enough to just jump in and do it. We are going to be signing our build contract very soon (yay) and we are building the Leabrook Mk3 with Fairmont Homes which I have just fallen in love with so we won't be changing too much on it. Will this all be worth it? I hope so. In 3 weeks we will all be moving out of our very nice rental which although it isn't ours we moved in here when it was brand new, have been here a very long time and I have loved living here and it has felt like a home. Where we are moving is the downside to all of this! We are all moving in with my parents for convenience. My parents are insane and nosey and overbearing so there is no doubt they will drive us mad lol. But obviously we are so very thankful that they will allow us all to bombard their lives for the next year or so. I really look forward to updating everyone on our build and getting to that final stage where we really do have a house we can call our home. FINALLY! My other half to our persona on here (Kay) grew up in country SA (kapunda and birdwood to name a few) and we didn't feel right building in the "city" we had to have a feel of country air so that's what were doing now. You'll love it I'm sure!! We're currently living with my parents while our build is happening as well. As much as I love them it drives us insane but it comes in very handy for saving that hard earned coin. Good on you for taking all of that on board at once too! I don't have kids but I know what working and studying is like and that was pushing me over the edge as it was. Congratulations once again and I'll be following this with keen interest! It is exciting stuff. I found your thread today while having a bludge. How annoying that you could be waiting until December for your land to settle :O but at the same time will provide you with some good saving time. Another little step for us today. We got a letter saying our contract had been accepted and we now have a job number and to top it off a phone call to say our soil report would be done over the next few days. Have to say I am pretty impressed with how quickly that has happened. We didn't expect a job number for atleast another week. On the downside we have to give an indication of our external selections to be put forward with council approval. This will be a hurdle for us as we have already had a few arguments about bricks lol. My other half likes "country" style colours which I do too but I don't think they suit our house. If we had a "country" style house with the big verandah his ideas would be perfect! I am going for a more modern look. I am sure we will find a happy compromise but it will be an interesting weekend making these decisions haha. You are at about the same stage as us except ours is taking longer ;( We waited four weeks for a job number, since then it's another been two weeks and no soil tested as yet. Re colours I was told that what you pick now for council is just an indication. You can change your mind at selections. Good luck coming to a decision together! Yes I was a little concerned i had to choose so early but that is correct. It is just so council get a feel for the look of your place. You can change it at final builders interview. Re: Our build with Fairmont Homes in Mallala, South Australi 15Apr 13, 2013 4:12 pm Yeah we knew that it was just that our colours were so totally different that if we went with one person's for the sake of putting something and then changed to what the other wanted it would have been a total flip. I am liking cream bricks with woodland grey roof and window frames so a grey and cream look whereas he was leaning towards red bricks which just reminded me of an old trust house in Elizabeth with a colourbond wilderness roof and what not which was odd considering he normally hates green. Anyway would be totally different if we changed to the other person's so we thought we would try to figure it out. We have just been down to Austral Bricks and PGH and had not one argument haha. I liked Austral almond which he thought was too bright but he did like Austral nougat which I liked but it was a bit greyer than I wanted. Went down to PGH and we both liked their nougat. He liked that it wasn't so bright and he liked the orangey tinge around the edges which you can see if your up close and it completely fits with the look I was leaning towards. Wasn't as hard as I thought haha just had to find a happy medium Building the Leabrook with Fairmont Homes in Mallala, SA.
