Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 05, 2013 10:47 pm Hi, I bought a 12.5m lot and I have been going through plenty of floor plans. One concern from me is the width of the entry passage. I really do not want to have a long, narrow passage as soon as I entered the house, however for most floor plans suitable for 12.5m, I do not have too much choice. My current floor plan has a entry width 1.37m for about 4m long and then it shrinks to 1.17m for another 6m long. How bad is that? Any typical numbers for minimum acceptable passage width please? Cheers. Re: Discussion on Entry passage width for narrow lots 2Feb 06, 2013 7:16 am 1.37 is quite wide, and 1.17 is still probably wider than average. Personally I wouldn't be too worried about those widths. Have a look at some display homes with hallways and see how they feel at whatever width they are, we're looking at 1.2m hallways throughout having looked at a few. I grew up in a house with narrower and have never thought twice of it. Good luck! 2 Re: Discussion on Entry passage width for narrow lots 3Feb 07, 2013 12:18 am seano 1.37 is quite wide, and 1.17 is still probably wider than average. The plan I like does not have a display home but I suppose I can find a similar one to check it out. Re: Discussion on Entry passage width for narrow lots 4Feb 07, 2013 9:39 am Hi doubletoplei, I love a wide passageway, but on a narrow block that would be the first thing that would go. I think your dimensions sound great and, in the context of the block width and width of the house, will feel generous. I just measured our hallway widths to get a idea on this house and other houses I've lived in. Our entry is 2m wide, further on it goes to 1.6, then the rear hall to the bedrooms is 1.1 and this is on a particularly wide block. Our rear hall of 1.1 feels pretty wide to me. It's wider than my brother's rear hallway, so I don't think you hve anything to worry about! I lived in a house that was on a 7.5 or 8m wide block (can't remember) and trying to judge by the measurements here, I'd say the entry way and hall were similar to the dimensions you mentioned. Definitely felt spacious in that house. Mark out the measurements on the floor with tape or newspaper and get a feel for it. The entry dimension ars still enough to have an entry table or other furniture if you wanted. And don't worry about what the dimensions are in other houses. Spaces can feel very different depending on the size of the block and the house. You might find a really wide hallway feels like wasted space and a bit imposing in a narrower house. I don't think you have anything to be concerned about. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself.
