Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 05, 2013 10:04 am Hi all,
Building a new house with Carlisle and looking to make it as connected as possible. We have Foxtel/AppleTV/PC/Consoles etc so a bit to think about. *Edit* 3 BDR + HT single storey. This is what I have come up with to speak to them about – we are getting a basic NBN pack but need more. Suggestions welcome! Do I need to prewire for Foxtel etc? Central network cupboard patch panel gigabit switch and router 2X points Master Bed 4X Points HT 2X points 2nd Bed 2X points living area 1X point kitchen (phone) cat 6 cabling Re: Networking/NBN new build 2Feb 05, 2013 11:45 am Are you building a double story? If so, pre-wiring for Foxtel is a must. If single story, it would still be good to do it at the time of build if you can. Don't forget study if you have one. Consider if 2 points in the living area is enough, these days most things need ethernet such as your Foxtel, hard disk recorder/media player if you have one, PS3/Xbox, smart TV + if you want to plug a laptop in. Remember wired is a lot faster than wireless particularly for streaming HD content. Is the NBN coming to your area soon? To me it doesn't matter as I know the NBN is coming everywhere eventually, but a friend of mine was told NBN would be available in her estate immediately, she paid $1500 extra for whatever they charge for (internal cabling I assume) and then all of a sudden no NBN for 3 years. In saying that, it was better for her to get it done during the build but she is not a high internet user at all, doesn't even have an ADSL connection at the moment and none of the NBN stuff was explained to her. We are building in the Highlands Estate - Newbury Village and were assured by Stocklands NBN is ready. NBNCO says our stage has "Commenced" so at least it's on the radar Re: Networking/NBN new build 4Feb 05, 2013 1:39 pm I checked yesterday with both Optus and iiNet - Optus were useless, but iiNet confirmed and were confident that not only was it connected and ready to go, I could basically sign up right now and have it connected. 5-10 day turnaround for service activation. Re: Networking/NBN new build 5Feb 21, 2013 6:24 pm We're in a similar situation - wanting to know how to set up our home for NBN. We're building a 2 story house though, so might prove a little more troublesome. Also, the site says installation has commenced but were not so convinced.... how do you find out for certain? Do the telcos have this info? How it went for us in an existing house was they dug a trench from the street and laid the cable to the house where the box was installed on the outside. An electrician then put cable through the wall and down to two boxes, one is the modem and they require a single PowerPoint (I can take a pic of it if you like) then one of the boxes runs to a wireless router and it's normal from there on. I assume you would try to keep all the nbn stuff and router in one closet. I would then run Ethernet cable through the walls to desktop computers with a permanent Ethernet port in the wall. That's what we're doing anyway. My partner knows much more about all this then I do. Only the Ethernet cabling should cost anything. All the installation was free as part of us signing up with an ISP.
