Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 02, 2013 9:45 pm Hi Gents and Ladies, I'm planning to building with Huxley for a double-storey home around 40 SQ. From the ProductReview website, everyone has complained about them in terms of the slowness of their building progress after lock-up stage. Can anyone give me some suggestions if you have built with them before. Thanks so much! Re: Has anyone built with Huxley before? 2May 08, 2013 2:50 pm Hi Alanoz, We are about to start the building process with Huxley - we have our colour consultation and kitchen appointments in the next week and our plans have been submitted for DA approval with council. We were told it would be a 30 week build and that the externals (brick, frame, slab and tiles) would go up very quickly (within weeks) and that it appears like nothing is being done on your site when you turn up (as it is all happening inside). Whereabouts are you building? We are in the Newcastle area. Good luck with it all. Re: Has anyone built with Huxley before? 3Nov 15, 2013 12:48 pm We are just about to sign up with Huxley and I too got worried when seeing the reviews on product review. We're in Sydney and the sales rep has been great to date. I'm hoping some other people out there might reply with some recent reviews. Re: Has anyone built with Huxley before? 4Nov 29, 2013 12:22 pm Hi, we too are now looking to build with Huxley. We have paid them the $1100 design fee and are just waiting to hear back from them with a price. We are building in Newcastle, and so far the sales guy has been great, even came to our place to go over the plans on his day off. There is not much info on the web except bad reveiws. Our sales guy said they are notorious for being slow builders.... he said something about waiting until one tradie has finished before booking in the next to save on doubling up and the risk of the first not being finished so the second couldnt start.... which seems like poor management to me. I guess we jsut need to be paitent i guess, and expect a longer build time - we were told 9 months for a 2 story. Would love more Huxley builders to let us know their experiences. Building Glenelg 27 in Newcastle. 1st July - On Site 3rd December - Handover Re: Has anyone built with Huxley before? 5Nov 29, 2013 5:12 pm 9 months seems to be normal for a project-home time-span at the moment, at least around the Wollongong-Sydney-Newcastle conurbation(*) and for a 2-storey house. So that wouldn't seem to be unusual. (*) Hey look I used a word from Geography class 28 years ago! Re: Has anyone built with Huxley before? 6Mar 17, 2014 9:33 pm We have since signed up and they have been pleasing to date. Just received a storm water design specific to our councils requirements and have engaged a demolition company so submission under CDC will be next week. Huxley have been very good with the administrative side of the process. I'm sure the build will be slow but I would prefer it be done properly with their preferred contractors. Famous last words?? Re: Has anyone built with Huxley before? 7Apr 30, 2014 9:25 am we ended up scrapping Huxley. After a rather heated discussion with my husband which resulted with the sales guy just turning his back and walking out of the conversation... we pulled the pin and told them to give us our money back. They couldn't give us justification as to why they wanted to charge us almost $20k to add a room, which would only use an extra window, internal wall and door (all the walls were already there, as was the roof). His reasoning was beyond belief. I think he thought we were complete idiots. Eventually they gave us our $1100 back... and we are building a better house with more stuff for less money now.... We are considering signing with H$$xley to build a 42sq house in north side of Sydney. Like many of you were, we are a bit worried about all the reviews and it's hard to tell which are honest or not. . For those on this post who started before us can you update on how it's going? -would you recommend Building with H to date? -have site costs blown out compared to tender? I'm having trouble getting a straight answer on whether the site costs are fixed? -is anyone writing a blog, or would be open to me PMing you with a few questions? Would so appreciate you sharing your experiences. Re: Has anyone built with Huxley before? 9Mar 31, 2015 2:56 pm • We signed up to build with Huxley and that was worst mistake in life. They have taken away all the excitement and left us with utmost misery and heartache of a broken dream of building a new home. • We initially signed up for a home and land package with them and paid 5% plus the usual deposits to secure the lot. They were very pushy to get our money and always ask for money at very short notice and made all the sweet promises to sign the tender. All they are interested in is taking your money, but if we had any questions or queries about the purchase they would always give us the cold shoulder and never have time. 2 months later, still no signs of land registration and every time we ask them, they didn’t have answers, never returned phone calls and never gave us an update on the progress. Upon chasing them for a month or so we found out that developer increased the land price by $50,000 which they have no control over apparently!! In another words, they didn’t have any formal contract with the developer to safeguard the buyer for potential price hike. It was only through a phone call we made, that we found out of the price rise, so even though Huxley was aware of this for some time they had no intention of telling us till we made the call. Since we couldn’t afford it anymore, we had no choice but to withdraw from the contract and asked for the deposit back. • Despite numerous phone calls and chase up with the sales agent, there were no signs of refund of almost $19,000. This is very typical of them that after they receive your money they don’t know you anymore and level of service is absolutely shocking! We decided to talk to GM of Huxley Homes and he was the worst person we have EVER come across in terms of service. He gave us numerous deadlines to process the refund which he failed to meet, and threatened in an email that if we pursue the matter further he will delay payment. We even agree to that because we just wanted our money back but he failed to deliver on this promise again. Therefore we had to lodge complaints with Fair Trading of NSW which didn’t achieve anything. • After numerous contacts and empty promises we had to take them to NSW Civil & Administrative Tribunal where the matter was heard and the GM requested for another 5 weeks to process the refund… We finally got our money back after 6 MONTHS of chase up. We probably still would be waiting for it unless we went to the court for an order as Huxley made no attempt or have any intention to give us our refund. • This has caused us so much heartache and difficulty for which they have never given a simple apology. They are the worst people you can ever go to in terms of service, but very quick and polite when it comes to taking money from you. So please, if you are reading my review, do yourself a favour and avoid Huxley Homes at any cost. Re: Has anyone built with Huxley before? 10May 09, 2015 11:42 am CiscoSky - that is so disappointing to hear. I've escalated 2 matters to the GM, the first we was really good as it involved another company and the second was, as you found, terrible! We are slowly getting the build happening and hubby and I have agreed not to get too emotional about the build. It is SO hard as it should be a really enjoyable process. While the time factor is frustrating, we have found the quality of their work is really good so far (at brick stage). I strongly advise future Huxley customers to have good knowledge of the building process (this is our first build) and get the SS's details early on for better timeframes of when and what is happening. We found the council approval and selections really prompt and easy. Initial contract was a little tough to get right. Re: Has anyone built with Huxley before? 11May 09, 2015 12:43 pm A Huxley next door to U.S. has ground to a holt with nothing happening in the last 3 months. They have started gyprock but have issues with bricks & cladding. They started around August last year (6 weeks before us) and we've just finished. Haven't spoken to the owners about it but they can't be happy. Re: Has anyone built with Huxley before? 12May 09, 2015 1:23 pm Our neighbours are building with Huxley, it's been just over a year since Huxley took over the site and they are not yet at lock up. It's been a frustratingly slow process for them, as you can imagine! They are on to their 3rd site supervisor, and while there have been no issues with the quality of the build, the site is a mess (as acknowledged by the latest site supervisor), communication has been poor and there is no end date in sight. Although a 9 month contract, each variation has added 2 weeks to that, so with various other delays thrown in, they have up to something like this November to complete the build. I'm sure they'd be saying to build with someone else. Re: Has anyone built with Huxley before? 13May 20, 2015 11:04 am We are currently building with Huxley Homes. We are now into week 44 of a 40 week contract and the brickwork is now close to complete. Everything was fine up to completing the slab. From then on, there were major delays with the frame and especially the brickwork. With the amount of time that the timber frame and first level floor were exposed to the rain, the timber is now completely covered in moss, mildew, and grass. Knowing that the timber is in such a bad state, I organised an independent inspection done with the intent that payment of the brickwork would be withheld until all defects had been reasonably fixed. That inspection has now shown that the mould is deep set into the timber. There is no treatment for this except for replacing the timber. That's the whole frame! He's recommendation is for us to get a lawyer and that the house should be demolished. I could go on and on about Huxley Homes, and I probably will at a later date.
