Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 01, 2013 12:43 pm Hi everyone, I am looking for ideas on how to include a study nook into our plans for when the smaller rooms in our to-be-built 4 bedroom house start filling up and can no longer be used for our computer equipment (both my partner and I work in IT). At the moment I have around 2.0m x 4.0m to play with and I'm not sure if it will be big enough. Does anyone have a study nook in their house and how effective/what size is it? Our alternative is to just add another room but I didnt want to eat into out backyard space. Thanks, YTD Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=63784 Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 2Feb 01, 2013 12:55 pm I'm looking at my desk here at work ... and I reckon I could get everything I wanted into 2m x 2m. Shared with a partner, 2 lots of 2m x 2m would be fine. Maybe post a layout here? I'd probably fit a 1m deep desk, 4m long, and from head-height and above install overhead cupboards & shelving/drawers. Plenty of power & internet in the wall above the desk. Could also have a few sets of drawers on wheels under the desk for more (portable) storage. Then have a set of bifolds that can close-off that area, so it looks neat when not using it & you can leave papers/machines on desks, wires running over the desk when required, etc. The power & ethernet you'd get the builder to install, the rest probably get a cabinet-maker to do? Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 3Feb 01, 2013 1:19 pm Thanks Forg The long desk & bifold door was exactly what I was thinking. Storage space was another issue but overhead cupboards should sort that out. Below is the proposed plan. The original plan has the laundry in the proposed study nook space. If for example, conference calls are a part of your work, you may find that a nook doesn't isolate you from the noises in the house (family, tv, cooking, dogs barking etc) Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 5Feb 01, 2013 2:17 pm We will have a fairly small room for both our computer use as well, about the same size as yours. We've come to the conclusion that we need to buy ourselves some new computer desks to suit the room, and rather than having the massive L-shaped desks that we have now, we'll get smaller desks with more storage upward instead of outward, if that makes sense. Or like Forg said, overhead cabinets for storage. I had a very open area behind the "nook" in mind; didn't realise it would be it's own fully-enclosed room. If you're both going to be in there at the same time, then I think you'll be crowing each other a bit, rolling chairs back into each other when getting-up etc. That could work if it's allowed, but it's gonna be noisy IMHO, you'd want to be careful with flooring & maybe some pin-boards so that the cloth or cork can soak-up noises - is the bedroom directly next to it still an OK size? Also, I think that door could make it difficult to use the room properly; I presume you'd want a desk at each end, but the door could impinge on the space of the person who's at the end further towards the centre of the house. I think it's possible, though! Actually you could probably dummy it up in your current loungeroom with some cardboard boxes or some-such ... Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 7Feb 01, 2013 2:24 pm offshore is whether you use the phone a lot when working at home. Agree - study nooks are great for kids doing homework, where they can be supervised using the internet etc. But if you plan on doing any type of work, especially taking phone calls its great to have a private, noise free space to do so. Depending on where they are located in a house, I think study nooks can look untidy - especially if you can't file away documents every time. Our 'Study' is 2.3 x 2.9, has a built in robe and will potentially double as a nursery. But as someone who sits on 2-3 teleconferences having a place I can shut off will be a godsend Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 8Feb 01, 2013 2:34 pm Is It too late to lose 50 cms off bed 4 to make the study slightly wider ? Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 9Feb 01, 2013 2:59 pm Oops! Forg - now I know what kind of study nook you were talking about. I imagined it to be a room without a door! The 'discussion' at the moment is if the room is 4x2m would a desk AND chairs fit but if we: - steal a little bit of room from the Master bedroom & bedroom 4 - adjust the ensuite (nooooooo!) - add 1m length to that side of the house We'll have a 4x2.45m room. It's not ideal but unless I can convince my partner that under 2m is enough or I find a better place to fit it in I wont have much of a choice *hands more money to builder* Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=63784 Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 10Feb 01, 2013 3:02 pm No! Don't extend your home...big $$$$ just move some internal walls just slightly. If you can, mark out the area with some ribbon/ string in your home now and put in a desk and some chairs and see if you can get in and out ok. If you can..go for it. Leave it as is. If you can't,get a skinnier desk, or just move the 2 walls 25 cms. You have a huge ensuite, 25 cms, gone....you won't notice it! And 25 cms off bed 4. Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 11Feb 01, 2013 3:07 pm The garage looks extra long so I would probably pinch some of that space and put the laundry behind the garage. Then move bed 4 forward to make the study bigger. Regards, Grumbles Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 12Feb 01, 2013 3:15 pm Here's another idea for feedback - slicing down some of those rooms - move the main toilet (basin to be added) between the bathroom and laundry - remove the WIL & change the WIP to cupboards and pop a room in there? Grumblebum - I like your thinking! I'll throw that idea to the other half as well Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=63784 Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 13Feb 01, 2013 3:22 pm Hi YTD, I know this plan very well, we nearly built it. I reckon 2 x 4 is heaps of room. Our study is 2.6 x 3 approx and we have double 820mm doors opening into the 2.6. I can comfortably sit at the desk with the doors open, or someone can open the door when I'm in there and it's no problem. I have often said to people I wish our study was less squarish and more long and narrow. Having two computers in a long narrow space would work better for me because the areas are more defined. The only real reason I can see to increase the width is if you want a full wall of shelving on the wall without the desks. Even then, most bookcases are only 30cm deep, many desks 60-70cm deep. That still leaves a metre in between. That would be heaps of space for me. I'd rather the extra width where it is in the bedrooms. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I think it's just close to a fold on the scanned/photocopied page. Having mulled your plan over in between doing other things; I don't mind it. I like kiwi's idea of the application of string to test the size. A 4m long desk that runs along the whole wall, with storage permanently installed above & some Officeworks-or-similar rolling sets of drawers should fit-out the room nicely as an office. I presume you won't be working full days in there, will you? Just a few hours after work, or some occasional weekend stuff where there's an upgrade or some-such? You'd possibly go spare if you had to spend full work-days in such a small area, but if it's a couple of hours & only every few days I can see it was working nicely (plus that stuff looks messy - having it in a closed-off room is kinda nice! ). Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 16Feb 01, 2013 3:38 pm DON'T sacrifice your wip or your linen. You will kill yourself. 2x4 is the size of a normal study! Just make sure you have excellent storage. Like someone said...( sorry, can't remember...gold fish) A desk the whole width bar 1 met where a 300 deep billy bookcase could go Cupboards above, roller chairs. Good drawers etc. you can get all that stuff from ikea etc and won't cost you a kidney. Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 17Feb 01, 2013 3:56 pm Joles - it is a popular one I like the idea of the long bench too, especially if working off two screens. Forg - we get the luxury of working from home every once in a while so we can spend up to 8 hours in there. My partner does some out of hours and a fair bit of weekend work (plus a side of on call) but ends up on the dining room table rather than the study we have now! Oh the garage is 5.51 x 6.36m - just right or could be adjusted? We will be trying the string test tonight and see what we come up with. I think it will work with the long desk & overhead cupboards. Kiwi - sorry, lost my mind there Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=63784 Re: Size of study: media room vs study nook 19Feb 01, 2013 5:55 pm here is a couple of pics of ours not complete as we are enclosing the pc box in an overhead cupboard and hiding all the pc stuff there as well. Only regret is that we didnt make it deeper as the bench is a little shallow to work on. http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g436/sceen7/210412009.jpg Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Dear Members I have to decide the Facade column size.
