Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 14, 2008 5:43 pm Hi All,
I was sent message by my CSR that i should organise for a telephone pre-wire to occur. I have no idea what this involves, is it just placing wires through the frame or do i have to organise to dig a trench, or do i just call a company to come in and do everything. I would really appreciate some advice as to what is required and who to call. Regards, Ratter Re: Telephone Pre-wire 2Apr 14, 2008 7:48 pm Depends on where you are... I'm going through this process with Telstra currently...
You have to get someone who has a telecommunications cabling licesnse to install (pre-wire) the phone points within your house. The best time of doing this is just after lockup, when the electrician is working! The pre-wire will wire all phone points to a NTD (Network Termination Device) located at a convenient place on the outside of the house... The Telstra technicians will provide the cable and conduit from the street to that point for the fixed cost of around $250... You must have the trenching dug ready for them to come in and install it. The best method is to contact the Telstra contractor and get him to come to site early to give you his best route. Ideally it'll be in the same trench as you electrical service, but seperated by the required 100mm... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! I have a feeling that we paid a bit extra for the trench and conduit from the pit to the house. Telstra still does the connection. I'll dig up the contract and let you know exactly what is included in our build - it may help. Re: Telephone Pre-wire 7Apr 15, 2008 11:09 am $299 for connection to telstra network
$200-$300 for trenching to connect to house $50 per phone point inside house Re: Telephone Pre-wire 8Apr 15, 2008 11:18 am Ok i got few questions then:
Can you dig the trench yourselves? Our trench is on the side of the house and is maybe 2m's away from where the lead in cable is on the house. The house has been wired already. Can we dig that trench from the Telstra pit to the house? How deep does it have to be? Alternatively, is there a minimum allowance for trenches included in the connection pricing or is it always an additional charge? I will have to call Service Stream to arrange it soon enough i suppose. Re: Telephone Pre-wire 9Apr 15, 2008 11:20 am **Phoenix** Ok i got few questions then: Can you dig the trench yourselves?. Yep! **Phoenix** Our trench is on the side of the house and is maybe 2m's away from where the lead in cable is on the house. The house has been wired already. Can we dig that trench from the Telstra pit to the house? How deep does it have to be?. There will be a minimum but I would be going around 300mm below slab and inside a counduit. **Phoenix** Alternatively, is there a minimum allowance for trenches included in the connection pricing or is it always an additional charge? I will have to call Service Stream to arrange it soon enough i suppose. I would call Vision stream to get a quote... Re: Telephone Pre-wire 10Apr 15, 2008 11:26 am **Phoenix** Ok i got few questions then: Can you dig the trench yourselves? You can dig the trench yourself: From the Telstra link above - You can dig and backfill the trench yourself or arrange for your own contractor to do this work. Alternatively, Telstra can refer you to Telstra's Approved Contractor to do this work for you. Details of property alignment, specifications and the route of the trench will be discussed with you by Telstra's Approved Contractor, or can be obtained from Telstra's Approved Contractor prior to digging the trench if you or your own contractor are providing the trench. Unfortunately there are no specifications for the trench on the web page. You could call Telstra (best of luck), or the approved contractor. Trench, laying the cable, joining the cable to the house?
I know from previous threads that Telstra actually do the connection at the pit, and you still have to pay for that (no escape). Yep, the telstra guy just had to rock up, spend about 2 mins at the house, another 2 mins at the telstra "pole thingy" down the road and was done! Nice $299 worth of work! You can dig that trench yourself. The telecommunications standard S0009 says that the cabling must be installed with at least 300mm of cover.... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me...
