Just wanted to pop back in and say thanks for accommodating my nosey-ness.

Needless to say I love your formal lounge room too and hope your wife has found the final touches she was looking for.

Is it hard to do - any special prep work or just slap the paint on?

Am thinking of doing it in our current house too if its not too costly etc

The driveway was not as good as expected. In retrospect, we should have gone for asphalt.
We chose a very dark grey concrete, but when it had dried, it turned quite light. the concreter had to use a tinted sealant to turn it back to the colour we chose. Now whenever the sealant is chipped, you can see the lighter concrete through it.
Not ideal, but currently it looks OK. Don't know how it will look in a few years though. Asphalt would have just been the right colour all the way through with no chipping.

Bitumen. With the jacaranda tree so close to the drive, I'm expecting the drive to crack in a few years. With bitumen I'm guessing it would be easier to patch as well. With concrete we'd have to try & match the colour too

Thanks for the house compliment. It suits the area.

The block is 21m wide & 930sqm. We needed a large wide block to build the house, as the council has a very low land space ratio (38%). We also wanted a nice large backyard for the kiddies to play in.

You know Rikster, I think you still did the right thing building the d/way in concrete. Bitumen moves & buckles, especially in the heat & especially on a slope.

It is a great idea. Makes keeping it clean a doddle. Just make sure you do it before you move in. So much simpler than moving everything out & putting it all back

The paint cost me about $150. It also took me about six hours in total. So, at a very rough guess, I suppose they would charge $500 ?

It is a very simple job to do yourself. You just paint the edges with a brush, to ensure a nice clean edge. Then do the main floor with a roller on a pole. You just need two coats.

Sorry to potentially be a "wet blanket", but we painted a garage floor several years ago and it was a disappointment from a durability standpoint.

We used Berger "Jet-dry" and the preparation and application were meticulous. We were only putting one car in a double garage/workshop at the time, so we covered most of the floor with carpet tiles and used those aluminium strips with coloured vinyl inserts to separate the carpeted area from the painted area where the car was parked.

Anyway, the finished job looked fantastic. A few years down the track, the carpet tiles still looked great in spite of heaps of abuse.

However the paint just could not cope with car tyres......I think it was the retained heat that caused the problem, but the marks where the tyres sat and the paint was destroyed were unavoidable as well as the track marks in and out.

Some might still think it was worthwhile for the overall look, but I don't think I would bother with the paint again......at least on any area where cars are regularly parked . OTOH, I'd definitely use carpet tiles in a workshop situation.
