Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 05, 2013 6:09 pm Hi everyone, I am trying to decide on new flooring for our home. Today we saw Bamboo flooring at Carpet a court and were leaning towards one of these colours: 1. distressed Walnut (dark brown and quite a high sheen) see this link for an example http://www.eurostylefloors.com/strand_woven_bamboo.html 2. Sepia (lighter brown, less glossy) see this link for an example http://www.westwoodtimberflooring.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=category§ionid=6&id=23&Itemid=48 Both are priced at $90/m2 (fully installed) which seems quite steep. My questions are: 1. Is this a reasonable price (I'm in Sydney) 2. We have two cats and envisage having a kid in the future. This flooring does seem to show scratches when they Are deep and the sales women was showed us how you can use a wax to make them less noticeable.but I am not 100% convinced. I am also a little worried about the high sheen of the walnut flooring. I have never had wooden floors before so a complete noob in this area! Are these valid concerns? Is there anything else I should worry about? Does anyone else have any experience with bamboo floors in either colours? Re: Please help with Bamboo flooring 2Jan 11, 2013 11:22 am Personally I prefer low or mid sheen, mirror shine shows up every crumb, scratch, bit of dust. I have had real wood on battens before, not bamboo. We had a few scratches after 8 years but nothing major, touch ups were easy. (But again this was with the "matt" finish on the wood which actually was a mid sheen finish). I have no idea about price of bamboo, sorry. Re: Please help with Bamboo flooring 3Jan 11, 2013 12:33 pm We've just installed bamboo floors (coffee colour) and had originally chosen the high gloss. Ended up changing our mind to a matt/low sheen finish. As Treesea has stated, a high gloss will show up dust and scratches very easily. Yes the high gloss looks lovely, but from a practical point of view, there will be a lot of work to maintain the look. Our floors haven't been cleaned yet and look pretty reasonable - so once they've been given a wipe down should look amazing. You will find that the darker colours will also show scratches. However as owners of two Kelpie Cattle X dogs, bamboo flooring was the obvious choice due to it being so hardwearing. Price seems about right - ours worked out to be around $83m2 - but that was for just under 100m2. Will fluctuate depending on the quality of the timber and amount of area you are flooring. Re: Please help with Bamboo flooring 4Jan 11, 2013 4:30 pm We have bamboo in walnut in our main entry, down a couple of stairs and then the bottom of the main stairs. I love it but it does show the dust, but it is easy to clean. It cost us about $80sqm installed plus extra for the steps. Hope that helps!
