Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 11, 2008 9:53 am Hi guys,
We are building with PD and trying to decide on the whole brick/render thing.. PD has given us the option of rendering the front facade of the Cremorne 41 for approx $3000, or the whole house for approximatly $18000 (hmmmm no!) Then we were told about different categories of bricks from Borals and how the higher you go in categories the higher you go in price... I don't know if I'm convinced I like the look of only rendering the front of the house and then having crappy bricks for the rest of the house...I think I'd prefer to have nice bricks and just render the portico... Now I've visited the Boral Website but can't work out which belongs to which category.... Eg. Elan, Woodstock, Escura, Novu and Horizon.... I'm pretty sure Horizon is the standard, but from there I don't know what is the next cheapest.... Does anyone have a better idea....I'm thinking it might be cheaper and look better to get say a Cat. 2 brick with white mortar and just render the portico rather than render the front facade only... So confused - and can't get in touch with my s/c until after the weekend! Thanks for any help Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 2Apr 11, 2008 10:10 am Head into Hopetuon, they have the available range of bricks there with samples and what Category each is in. Pick the ones you like then head to a Boral display to see a better display of your favourites. Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 3Apr 11, 2008 10:20 am Thanks for that!
I was hoping Hopetoun would have the categories listed but I had heard so many horror stories about the weekend staff's knowledge that I didn't think it would be accurate. Now that I know its all on display I'll head out this weekend! Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 4Apr 11, 2008 10:44 am Hi hawgl its a confusing decision to make .. im thinking of rendering and don't know whether to do the whole front or the portico.
As for the brick range hopetoun and boral have a information in a book form have you visited them? Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 5Apr 11, 2008 10:48 am Hi Clath,
I like the look of your bricks and think just rendering the portico would look great We haven't found a block of land yet so haven't even signed with PD - w have pretty much decided on all our colours, all our extras etc so it should be a fast process if we can just find a suitable block...because of this though we haven't been able to go to Hopetoun etc or even secure a build start...praying a block comes up soon so we can just start!! I'm thinking of just visiting Hopetoun on the weekend and getting a better idea of colours/ranges Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 6Apr 11, 2008 1:23 pm Hi Bel,
Our builder provided us with a list of all bricks that they use for each category. There were some bricks that they don't use, because it would involve mixing two shades of bricks. I'm sure PD would be able to provide you with one. I presume you haven't paid a deposit for the soil test, thus, you haven't been given the list of all suppliers and options yet. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 7Apr 11, 2008 1:35 pm The Boral staff are pretty helpful - if you let them know which bricks (or roof tiles) that you like, they will check the database to see if anyone has built with them so you can do a drive by to see the finished product. Dana -------------------------- Building with DFH - carpet installed! Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 8Apr 11, 2008 2:06 pm my builder actually asked us to visit the brick company before the color selection... so we went to Austral (because our builder use them) showroom and they are very good.. as soon as we told them which builder we are building with, they go through with us what is the standard, and what is the next category, and/or the higher end... and they also gave us some address to look... so i presume Boral would be the same... if you tell them you are building with PD, they should be able to tell you which range is standard and so.... Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 9Apr 11, 2008 2:56 pm Awesome! Thanks for all your help guys
I will go to Hopetoun this weekend - see what the categories are and then choose the one I like and ask for some addresses so I can see them in the flesh... I am just hoping that upgrading to a better brick with white mortar will turn out cheaper than $3000 that way I can justify only rendering the portico rather than the whole front facade... Thanks again Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 10Apr 11, 2008 3:01 pm haywgl PD has given us the option of rendering the front facade of the Cremorne 41 for approx $3000, or the whole house for approximatly $18000 (hmmmm no!) Ummmm, are you sure thats render and not bagged? Seems awefully cheap to me. We built with Eden Brae (same company as PD but in NSW) Our cost was $11,000 for front only render and $33,000 for the whole house. VJ Our builder provided us with a list of all bricks that they use for each category. ..I'm sure PD would be able to provide you with one. Eden Brae gave us a list also. Kryten The Boral staff are pretty helpful - if you let them know which bricks (or roof tiles) that you like, they will check the database to see if anyone has built with them so you can do a drive by to see the finished product. +1 we had a list of about 20 homes to drive by and look at the bricks. Just keep in mind that different batches of the same brick look slightly different. What does look nice is some of those 'architect' bricks and render, like the gertrudis brown from bowral bricks. Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 11Apr 11, 2008 3:03 pm Dont make the same mistake as we did and assume that the Boral catagories are the same as PD's catagories.
We choose a brick that was the same price from boral as the bricks in the builders range but Eden Brae wanted to charge us $4000 more because it wasnt in their std range. Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 12Apr 11, 2008 3:49 pm Hmm interesting...
Shady - The guy that gave us the info was only providing estimates but he definatly said (he even went as far as to write it down) $3000 for render to front profile and portico...he then went on to say around $18000 for the whole house... I agree with you though, I like the look of those architecture flat/smooth bricks with a bit of render, I like the Novu range that Boral has but again wil have to find out what category it is....$4000 extra..ouch! Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 13Apr 11, 2008 7:00 pm Hey there,
We are building (will start very soon) the Cremorne 34 and had quite a bit of trouble with our bricks. Our sales consultant gave us the prices for each category of bricks for our home (keep in mind - the 41 will probably be more for each category coz it's a bigger home so more bricks required). Anyway to cut a long story short - we did our research and selected a brick we wanted - then at contract were told it was $1000 more than we were told!! Our sales guy must've got a rap on the knuckles but we had to pay it. We did not want to change after months of researching and looking at many different homes. The book we have it from last year - so brick categories may have changed but.... Category 1 (standard): Rouge, Amber Blaze, Old Golden, Jarrah, Lachlan, Old Maple, Tanami, Brown Terrain. Category 2: Old Russet, Ironbark, Sandalwood, Berwick Velour, Kimberley, Spanish Red, Berwick Rustic, Old Woodville, Ripponlea. Category 3: Sydney Town, Settler, Port Phillip, Hobart, Red Velour, Hertiage, Windsor, Eldorado, Eureka, Colonial, Sunburst, Colony Rose, Historic Red, Pearl Grey Velour. Category 4: Gypsy Rose, Ember Glow, Mocha, Cleveland, Chateau, Melbourne Red, Orient, Pearl Grey Smooth, Kurrajong, Raheen, Rattan. Category 5: Coco, Arctic, Toffee, Spice, Moss, Vanilla, Chino, Soft Suede, Mist. Category 6: Merlot, Espresso, Coralstone, Stonewash, Victoria Blue, Duchess, Soft Gold, Red Smooth, Grey Nuance, Choc Tan, La Mesa, Peachy Isle, Amber Blaze (50mm), Cleveland (50mm), Tanami (50mm), Labassa (50mm), Mocha (50mm), Vic Blue (50mm), Domino. Hope this hasn't changed too much and doesn't lead you astray. We chose the Mocha 50mm brick (category 6 - ouch) about $4400, off white mortar $900 and render to the portico only about $1600. Good luck at Hopetoun. Kerrie Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 14Apr 12, 2008 9:24 am We choose Domino bricks which are in the most expensive category at Boral. The girl there calculated how many bricks we'd need (we're building a 45 square two storey) and how much extra boral would pay. She said allow $8000 but she had heard stories of builders charging far more. On selection day we were estatic that we were only charged $4400 by our builder. Fi has moved in!! Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 15Apr 12, 2008 9:37 am Thanks guys this is all very helpful
The bricks I like - Coco/Mist look to be in cat 5 which I was expecting , if our site costs are not a huge blow out we can probably justify getting these, white mortar and rendr to portico only..... Kerrie - The mocha is a great colour - I think your home will look stunnig. Thanks for all the info - very helpful Brittany - Glad you got a nice surprise, hopefully I can too! Off to Hopetoun today Re: Boral Bricks - Categories 16Nov 14, 2009 9:14 am hi yeh we have just been approved to build with metricon (in east gippsland, victoria), and are going with the brown terrain brick in the basic boral range. i can confirm the brown terrain is in the 'horizon' range on boral's website, in case you need to have a look. cheers DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair to do it properly you need to dig out the garden and waterproof the outside of the wall.
