Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 27, 2012 7:48 pm How many LED downlights do people install in their rooms. At first we thought to put 4 LED downlights (16W Brightgreen) in each bedroom, the average room size is 3.5*3.5 with ceiling at 2.4m (28c). Then we've been told that it will be overkill, and been recommended only one such LED downlight per room. After much deliberation we ended up with having 2 LED per bedroom. Now that I downloaded Brightgreen iPhone app - it calculated as 3 LED downlights per room... What should we do??? Add a dimmer if you want to drop the light level. I was going to suggest a dimmer. I think 4 will look better and dimming them will give you just the right amount of light. If you have separate LED strip lighting just put them on a different lighting circuit to the downlights. That way you have the choice of whether to have them on or off Custom downslope build Build thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61873 Blog http://www.buildingroyalmanor.blogspot.com.au Re: How many downlights per room? 7Dec 28, 2012 11:12 am Four 16w downlights in a room that size will be very bright. I agree with your builder, two will be more than adequate, especially for bedrooms (where you will also most likely have lamps to supplement). I have 11w throughout my house, and have found all my rooms to be very well lit including those I was worried wouldn't have enough. Re: How many downlights per room? 8Dec 28, 2012 3:01 pm There is an element of personal preference - but the point of downlights is to use the bright narrow beam to light a focused area. So things like kitchen bench or hallways are ideal. We are not using downlights in any of the bedrooms (apart from in our walk-in-robe) but it depends if you want the "neater" look of having all your lights plush into the ceiling. We put downlights into our bedroom in our last house before we sold it and found that when horizontally-positioned (sorry the other word I used is banned in the forums) in bed the direct light would always get in our eyes whereas our previous lights diffused it a lot more. In a couple of the living areas we are not doing anything initially because I want to work out how we are going to use the space once we are living there before deciding what sort of lighting I want - no point filling it with downlights if that is unnecessary or wouldn't work. In terms of lighting requirements, I'd be wary of completely relying on an app provided by a company that sells lights to define how many lights you need - and instead just have a look at similar sized rooms at family/friends houses to see what they've done and whether that is adequate. Downlights basically light the floor under them in a cone typically between 30 and 55 degrees. For bedrooms you need more diffused light, which is spread more evenly so that it washes the walls and ceiling. A good pendant light in the centre of the room can do this, complemented with a couple of wall sconces or bedside lamps. Much better solution than downlights.
