Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 11, 2012 9:25 pm Hi all, I am thinking of building a double story where the main bedroom is downstairs. Just weighing up what is the best option. We don't have any kids yet, but plan to. Has anyone had any experience with master bedroom downstairs and with young kids upstairs? Is it better to have all bedrooms on the top? I know a few people have told me,when the kids turn teenagers, having the master downstairs was a great thing. Concerned I will be running up and down every time the kids cry or yell out when they go into their own room from a cot for the first time. HD Double story home with main bedroom downstairs 2Nov 11, 2012 10:06 pm If you don't have kids yet, you're thinking too far ahead. It will be a nightmare to deal with babies and toddlers with that arrangement. You could always build that setup and sleep upstairs when you have kids of course. My sons are 6 and 3 so while I was ok with my 6 year old being upstairs, we were more concerned about the 3 year old. But as we were building our forever home, we decided a year or so of it not being the "best option" for small kids was worth it. If I had babies, I think I would still have the master downstairs but maybe make sure I also had a study so that it could be a nursery while they are very little. Good luck with your decision! Re: Double story home with main bedroom downstairs 4Nov 12, 2012 7:22 am Theres no way I'd sleep on a different floor to my kids. Too much hassle when they're sick to be running up and down stairs and through safety gates at zero dark thirty in the morning. You'll find yourself sleeping in a spare bed or on the floor up there anyways to be close to them. If one has a nightmare when they're older they wont be able to to just go jump in mums bed because they'll be stuck at the top of the stairs (or trying to work out how to climb over the gate). - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Our thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=67954 Re: Double story home with main bedroom downstairs 5Nov 12, 2012 9:14 am My parents bought a house with the main bedroom downstairs and all the kids bedrooms upstairs. We were 12,14,16,18 when we moved into that house and it worked well for us as we were older. We have two young kids now and I can tell you that it would have been a nightmare having the kids upstairs and us downstairs. My son did not sleep until 15 months and it was constant trips into his room, thank goodness he was only in the next room. My daughter frequently comes into our bed and I would hate for her to fall down the steps in the night. My kids wake up now, or have nightmares and it is easy having them close to us. You need to think whether you are going to stay in the house for awhile, as it may effect resale value, as you might limit your market as who would buy your house as families with small kids it wouldn't be practical. After a few years I turned my master bedroom into the study and the downstairs rumpus into the master bedroom (I have another bathroom next to the rumpus). When you build your “forever” home you can build to your specification. I would have a master bedroom, a study and another spare bedroom downstairs. Having a master bedroom with a parents retreat that can accommodate a baby initially than moving baby into the spare bedroom downstairs and once the little ankle biter is old enough move upstairs. If you have flexibility in your floor plan you can easily chop and change and identify what works for you. Rooms (apart from the kitchen and wet areas) should be called Multi Purpose Rooms able to be changed into whatever you want.
