Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 31, 2012 11:40 pm We are having a custom built house and I need help deciding how big rooms should be please! 1) My kids' current bedrooms are 3x3m not including built-in wardrobe which is too small. I was thinking 3.5 x 4m and my architect said that was too big, which is probably true. So what's a nice big kid's room that's not "too" big? 2) Similarly my current laundry is a tiny 1.5 x 2m, so I thought - double it to 2 x 3m, but again, the architect says that's too big. Is there an ideal size? How big is yours please? Re: how big are your bedrooms? 2Nov 01, 2012 12:02 am Hi Kylie, We are just about to start building and our smallest bed room is 3.1 X 3.6 i think any smaller would be to small. If it worked in our plan i would have liked to go at least 3.5 X 3.5. Likewise our laundry is 2.4 X 2.9 and i dont think it will be to big. If you have the space and can afford it i dont think there is such a thing as a to bigger bedroom. Just my 2 cents Re: how big are your bedrooms? 3Nov 01, 2012 12:10 am Hi Kylie, I am probably the wrong one to start about room sizes. My laundry is 3.8M by 2.25M it will have a linen closet and a stacked washer and dryer and hampers for clothes and space to do ironing etc. Rooms wise these are all excluding WIR and en-suites Guest Room = 4.33m x 3.71m Daughters Room = 4.08m x 5.03m Sons Room = 3.83m x 4.35m Study/ Spare Room = 4.23m x 3.72m Master Room = 4.6m x 5.03m Although the master seems small the overall dimensions including robes and en-suite is 10.1m x 5.03m I think if you want it you should have it. Ours is also custom and the room sizes are proportionate to other rooms in the house. It may well be too big but we wanted space and this is the dream house. I have read all the posts about being too big and not needing en-suites etc but it is something we want as a family and its within the budget. I respect peoples right to disagree. Not sure if this helps..... Ciao Mark Re: how big are your bedrooms? 4Nov 01, 2012 12:39 am Who is living there, you or your Architect? Our kids rooms are 4m x 4.5m - (teenagers) Our master is 4x4.9m plus large WIR and Laundry is 3m x 2.3m - including full length linen press with sliding doors Re: how big are your bedrooms? 6Nov 01, 2012 6:59 am Ours was down to budget. Would have loved 3.5x3.5 min for kids rooms but its all to do with $$$ Re: how big are your bedrooms? 7Nov 01, 2012 8:00 am I opted for the particular design I did because of the bedroom sizes. bedroom 3 is 3.9x3.4 - with other builders they were more like 2.7x3.0. I've lived in a similar shoebox all my life... never again, thanks. I'm curious to know what a 'normal' sized bedroom is in most American-style houses. They appear to be huuuuge. TV would have you think it's normal to have an 8x4m bedroom, and shows like Friends would tell you that a 5x4m apartment bedroom isn't anything out of the ordinary Building a Delta 21 at Craigieburn - http://homeofzero.blogspot.com.au/ Deposit: 26/02. Re: how big are your bedrooms? 8Nov 01, 2012 9:25 am Hi Kylie40, We had our house designed for us and basically listened to our designer and the third bedroom ended up 3 x 3.7 including BIR. I find it a bit claustrophobic but we are only going to use it as a study/spare room so I can live with it. Our son's room is 3.8 x 4 including BIR and I find it just big enough - particularly now that he is on the cusp of being a teenager and wants his own space. Just for the record, ours is a very small house by modern standards (only 18.8 squares) so I'm not speaking from the perspective of a McMansioner! The laundry probably doesn't need to be too big - ours is 2 x 3.5 but it is a laundry/bathroom next to our bedroom because I hate ensuites. Cost is a big factor though if you are using an architect so I can understand why he is asking you to go small. Good design and storage, storage, storage can make up for space. When we were planning our house, the minimum size of our bedrooms had to be 3m x 4m. I think we made the right decision making sure the bedrooms were big enough - our current rental has fairly small bedrooms and its doing my head in! But with like everything, budgets mean prioritizing so you have to decide how important big bedrooms are. For us, they were very important as we couldn't change it after it was built! Good luck with your decision! Re: how big are your bedrooms? 10Nov 01, 2012 9:31 am Did you also tell the draftsperson what you want the total size of the house to be. If you have told him you want a 30 square house but whant big rooms then they will be do big to fit into this criteria. Re: how big are your bedrooms? 11Nov 01, 2012 10:36 am My Kids rooms are around 4x3m. Laundry is 1.7x2.9m (1.7x4.4m if you add WIL) Re: how big are your bedrooms? 12Nov 01, 2012 10:55 am I had wondered about kiddies rm size too. Approx 3 X 3. In the end if really came down to the kiddies ages & what they need in their rms eldest 16,12,nearly 11. What would be suitable for guest rms later. I'm also thinking our's will be around for a while Bedrms have ggod natural lighting, built in robes with sliding mirrrored doors (had never liked these) Rm for a desk (study or gamers),bedside tables. They are near their activity rm,bthrm, powder rm,linen etc...... Also near the door inside from garage when they are alittle older n going out :th In the end you have to be happy, just think about later as well,,once the white went on the walls the rooms looked a better size & really just what they needed so were happy Good luck! If we hadn't the room would be prob to small ( slightly) Re: how big are your bedrooms? 14Nov 01, 2012 12:02 pm Consider your family set-up, if you plan on staying long term and only have two kids, go for two big bedrroms rather than having that 4th one no-one uses, Guests can stay in Media room etc. For re-sale I think two large rooms would look attractive to plenty of buyers with two teens etc. rather than 3 small minor rooms. Re: how big are your bedrooms? 15Nov 01, 2012 12:24 pm Our house plan has 3x4m bedrooms for the "kids" rooms, which was a must have. We didn't want anything smaller than that and passed over designs because the bedrooms were smaller. I think there is a such thing as wasted space, but as far as bedrooms go there is so much you can store in those away from visitors eyes that they can't really ever be too big. Re: how big are your bedrooms? 16Nov 01, 2012 12:30 pm donna61 For re-sale I think two large rooms would look attractive to plenty of buyers with two teens etc. rather than 3 small minor rooms. That's logical right? We did this when we built the first time - removed a 4th bedroom so that we could increase the size of bedrooms 2 & 3. When it came to resale we found that we had excluded a large share of the market - every family that came through the house was looking for a '4 bedroom house'. Not sure if it was a mindset/status thing - but everyone wanted that 4th bedroom. Having a decent sized bedroom is nice, but I don't think is a must. More important is having a communal space for kids/teens to be able to hang out is preferable. For the new build we learned from the earlier mistake and made sure that we had that 4th bedroom! Sizes approximately (excluding robes) Bed 2 - 3.8 x 4.2 Bed 3 - 3.9 x 4.2 Guest - 3 x 2.9 Master - 4.2 x 4.2 Laundry - 3.9 x 2.2(including WIL) Re: how big are your bedrooms? 17Nov 01, 2012 1:00 pm With a single bed and room for a large chest of draws worked out our kids bedroom 3.2 x 3.2 with built in wardrobes. Main Bedroom 3.8 x 4.2. I classify bedrooms are just for sleeping in not living in. Kids spend too much time alone in the bedroom these days and you have no idea what they are up to. I have a separate study and theater room with sound bats. Open space Lounge room/Kitchen/Dinning area is where I put the extra space. Re: how big are your bedrooms? 18Nov 01, 2012 1:07 pm We are in a Rental with small bedrooms, doesn't stop the older girl spending all her time in her room and the younger one won't even use her room because it depresses her. She sleeps with me, hubby sleeps in spare room. Won't be a spare room in new home! Re: how big are your bedrooms? 19Nov 01, 2012 2:49 pm Have a look in some display homes so you can have a feel of how big the rooms are, and look at the dimensions while you're there. The rooms in the house we're going to build are: Bed 2 3660 x 3000 Bed 3 3100 x 3300 Bed 4 3500 x 3020 And all have walk in robes. The master suite will be considerably larger. - MrsT Brought first house in 2008. Renovated...a LOT. Built in 2013.
