Yes, where the doors & robes are placed makes a big difference. My kids' current rooms are both 3x3m but in son's room the BIR is opposite the door so there's only one possible way to arrange the bed, desk & chest of drawers leaving very little room left. Daughter's room is same size with same furniture yet different layout leaves her with more room.
I've had a closer look at the sketch up the architect did - supposedly to my specs - and discovered he's actually drawn the bedrooms & laundry bigger than I asked for - a couple much bigger - so now I understand why he thought they were too big.
And I can see from all your answers that 3.6 x 3.6 or 3.6 x 3.9 is not unusually large, so it's all good now (if I can just get my architect to draw what I ask for!)
