I am going to ring the SS early in the week to get an update and see how we are traveling. I just checked yours out looks like it is coming along well. The frame will go up really quick . Re: Labs New Build 64Jul 05, 2013 12:32 am Hi blacklab We are also building with Fairmont and have a couple of questions for you as you sound like you know what you are doing How did you go with Exotic Gardens? We are looking for a good quality low price option for perimetre paths, driveway, fencing, retaining and artificial lawn. Also, I have been fairly horrified this week at some of the upgrade costs on baths, toilets, basins, tapware, ovens etc at DI. I was expecting the cost would be the difference in recommended retail prices, but they are only crediting ridiculously low amounts back to me for the standard items. For example, the standard basin is RRP $94, but they are only crediting me $30. And they wanted to charge me over $600 to upgrade oven to the next model, which is only $150 extra RRP. I was also disgusted to be charged $150 to put 3 chrome plated drain grates in. Apparently the old plastic style are standard. But seriously, those chrome plated grates are like $10 at plumbing stores! Did they hit you with that one also? Thank you for any advice.... One thing that has also just happened to me is that the bathroom taps we wanted are no longer available so they what to charge us $160 per tap (X4) extra to put in something similar. The DI contract has a clause that if they can supply what you want you will be required to pay the difference... Personally if I had my time again I would not sign it until I had in writing that if they can’t supply what I want I have the option to owner supply. If you don’t like the price of something go back and ask your sales person for a discount, Don’t be afraid to ask (If you don’t ask, you don’t get). We have not gone with Exotic's whilst the pricing is competitive we likes Greenslades landscaping better. They don’t do concrete (they do paving) so we are getting that done by someone else (Not sure who yet). Cheers Lab Re: Labs New Build 66Jul 05, 2013 10:40 am We have just had the same problem Jennifer. Some upgrades are fair and some are just downright ridiculous. We ended up only doing what was not easy to change after like putting mixers in but only cheap ones and we can change later (so you don't have to buy a new basin), changed basins, changed toilets, stainless steel appliances and a few others but not a lot more (except kitchen and bathroom selections cause everyone needs a pretty kitchen haha). I couldn't believe some things. So we will change door handles, internal doors and a couple of other things. I worked out some of it was so overpriced when I asked how much to upgrade internal doors and they told me $69 I have seen the doors I wanted in Bunnings for something like $30 or $40! We had ours today and they refused to lock in those items and my bank won't approve finance if those items are not finalised. Were your consultant's estimates close on allowances such as tiles and stormwater? Ours unfortunately were well out even though we chose standard tiles. My suggestion would be to submit the costing and then see what the bank says, on those items i think most banks are ok. Good luck Re: Labs New Build 69Jul 10, 2013 8:31 pm Lab, beautiful home ( insert upstanding and clapping icon here !) Re: Labs New Build 70Jul 13, 2013 2:34 pm Thank you Jellybelly. As I have recently started a new job and been getting home after dark (Adelaide winter dark by 6pm )I have not been able to get down to the site and see what going on. Well I recently managed to get down there and learnt that besides a few small things (Rendering portico, Bath install, touch ups etc) all we have left to do is the tiling and painting... Is that stairs in your WIP? Re: Labs New Build 80Jul 14, 2013 4:00 pm Thanks Rocky as soon as its done i will take some pics and share. Hi Jennifer, i originally didnt want a spa but the GF did... She won .The stairs in the WIP are due to our split, they connect the house to the garage. Thank you so much everyone. This all makes a lot of sense.
