Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 30, 2012 9:54 pm Hi, So I have been around for a little while stalking everyone’s builds getting ideas and the general do's and don’ts. Firstly I must say this forum is a must for anyone building a house without the wealth of information on here we would not have even got out the gates. I thought since I had turned into such a stalker it was only fair that I share our build. About two years ago we brought a block in Trott Park, SA with the intention of building a house to last us a few years before building again. The only problem with this was I did not expect that we would fall in love with the area and the views, Not that we are complaining, it’s just meant that both our expectations and budget have change considerably. After having a bad experience with one builder we decided it would be best to lose our 2k deposit and choose another builder. Boy are we glad we did, we are now building with Fairmont Homes and they have been great and are giving us exactly what we want (Sometimes after a little push ) The View: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Front / Rear Elevations: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Side Elevations: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Final Plan: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We have a meeting with Exotic Gardens on Friday to get ideas and quotes on concrete, fencing, retaining walls, fencing etc so we would be really keen to hear if anyone has used them and what they thought about quality / price. Re: Labs New Build 2Oct 30, 2012 11:25 pm Wow what a view, Lovely plan. Glad you have a builder now that you have some confidence in. Goodluck with it all. The gyprock was finished today and the bricks should be finished in a week or two. I will get some pics up tonight to show you the progress . Re: Labs New Build 7May 21, 2013 7:41 pm Hi Amy, We are just of landers road near the nursing home. How far are you through your build ? Re: Labs New Build 8May 21, 2013 7:45 pm Ah yep, I know exactly where, nice spot! Just started our site works.......we have run into major issues with dreaded rock. We have had a rock breaker for almost two weeks now and have had around 400 tonne of rock removed. Moving in now with a lot less than first thought but oh well....can't do much about it now!! Hopefully they wont slug you to much $$ for it... So have you been given a site supervisor yet ? Ours is Brett. Re: Labs New Build 11May 21, 2013 8:10 pm At least 20k we are looking at now
Our facades are similar! Love your bricks and niche in the home theatre! No supervisor until our slab is poured. Your going to have one beautiful home once it's finished Re: Labs New Build 12May 21, 2013 8:11 pm Looks great, which brick did you pick? We have high ceiling too so glad you like them. Makes everything look more spacious. From your plan the internal doors look to be 2400mm, is that the case? We are wanting the same so will see how yours look if that is the case. Btw your house is huge!! Any other tips for building with Fairmont? Keep us posted with progress and pics!!! Re: Labs New Build 14May 21, 2013 8:27 pm Thanks maddutchman. Thanks Amy, Wow 20K that’s a lot hopefully they will be finished soon.. I think you will have the same SS as us given it is in the same area. Thanks Fairmont, our bricks are Liquorice with the Brighton light white mortar. We have gone for 2.7 high ceilings @ the front and 3.38 @ the rear with the 2.4 High doors. The house is much bigger than we need at the moment given it is just me and my girlfriend but one day we may fill it up . The biggest tip I can give you with Fairmont is to ask for discounts and things to be included all the time. Every time I had a meeting with them I asked for something else. We got discounts on a lot and some things thrown in for free. If they tell you they can do something just remember you are paying the bills so if you want it they should do it... An example of that they refused to put the manhole in the garage as they said it was an insurance issue, I pushed and pushed and then it got moved... With any builder get everything, and I mean everything in writing and triple check everything before you sign it. Re: Labs New Build 15May 21, 2013 8:35 pm We included 2.7 ceilings but forgot to heighten the doors! 3.38 must feel huge!!! IMO it doesn't look right & who could be stuffed dragging a ladder through the house. Re: Labs New Build 17May 21, 2013 8:46 pm Yea Amy it feels massive. Best thing we did is go the bigger ceilings . Yea Mad in the end the sales guy said he cant ask his bosses for any more ... I felt for the guy so i said ok i wont ask for anything else since that was the day we where signing the contract, but then i said i needed something small to push me over the line so they through in a dishwasher . The reason they gave us for the mainhole was that they are self insured and people could break in and steal stuff as the garage door goes on last. I just kept on saying if the want to steal something they will smash the sliding doors rather than crawl through the roof. Re: Labs New Build 18May 21, 2013 8:54 pm Damn it I wish I pushed harder for the manhole in the garage!!!! Just didnt make sense anywhere else. Re: Labs New Build 20May 21, 2013 9:46 pm We got the man hole in the garage with no debate. Sales guy said they don't like to do it due to the issues you mentioned but he did it anyway. Similar with timber flooring but that got put in our quote too Wow, 3metre ceilings! We are living with the inlaws and it's an old house with the super high ceilings. I forget they are even there. You and your gf will be very busy filling that house in oh so many ways, ha ha Thank you so much everyone. This all makes a lot of sense.
