Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 21, 2012 8:06 pm Hi, We are in the process of our first build (custom home) and I am looking for thoughts/opinions on the 2 bulkheads that are in our family/meals area. We have one long room with the kitchen at one end across the back wall and a large Island bench (1000mm x 4250mm) through the middle looking on to the meals and then family area at the opposite end. To distinguish between the family and meals area a little we had a bulkhead to go around each area with downlights in each. My dilemma is the bulkheads have gone up opposite to what I thought they would be and they are opposite to the Afresco and entry foyer bulkheads. Our site manager knows my concern and I think we will be fine in them reversing it - but my question is should we reverse it or actually leave it. Pro's of leaving it is that it is a little different, but I have never seen this anywhere else before so concerned of how it looks. Plus if we do have it the other way Also the way it will mean a 600w bulkhead going through the room just infront of the kithcen Island - will this be strange if we do revert them back? Cons- We have 3m ceilings throughout and we have this large room and effectively the way it is we are losing all our height in the room (except the kitchen). Also the Island bench is huge and I am concerned with the loss of height it will take over the whole room. The bulkheads are 600w x 400d and thought these were going around the perimeter of each of the sections in the room somehow enhancing them as separate spaces and keeping full height in the middle. the way they are is the full ceiling height is actually around the perimiter of the room and the 400mm drop is the whole ceiling in the center instead giving a dropped ceiling look. This is actually difficult to explain, but I have added photos here of how they currently look and what I was expecting was the other way: http://s1173.photobucket.com/albums/r59 ... ead%20blg/ You can see the floor plan, although a littly blurry, on our blog. Anyway, any advice from anyone who knows much about bulkhead designs would be great as we will need to get them to change it in the next week before they gyprock. Thanks so much. Good luck Re: Bulkhead Design advice please 3Oct 23, 2012 10:58 pm Thanks Gogo, I am in discussions now with the builder. certainly will change it to what our expectations were and due to the fact the plans were not clear I am hoping we dont pay for this, which we shouldn't. I just need to make sure what we thought is also going to look ok too. On a side note - saw your kitchen on the kitchen forum... Amazing! We must have similar tastes, Our bench tops are the same (luna white?) our pendant lights over the island are the same and and we also have the white handle-free draws with the 45degree pull edge. only difference is ours is all white but we are also having the Miele built in behind. How are you finding yours? How are the benches holding up? How long was your bench and did you have a join in your slab? Ours is 4250mm x 1000mm so will have a join beside the sink... just hoping it doesn't become too visible. Anyway, you have an amazing home. We have QQ Luna white, very happy with the colour, the join is visible it I don't notice it anymore. Absolutely love my pendant lights, we have the cool white globes and I love the stark white colour that shows. Your house looks lovely, I hope they sort your bulkheads out for you, checked your plans and it is deceiving, hopefully they will come to the party for you Re: Bulkhead Design advice please 5Oct 24, 2012 6:29 pm Yes ours is QQ luna white too and all white cupboards. only hope the whites gel well and one doesn't come out looking too yellow. Our cupboards are really white, so hopefully the bench wont look dirty but all the photo's I have seen it looks fairly white. My fingers are crossed for the bulkhead, the site managers met with my construction manager, so hopefully we can sort it out - I am sure it will be fine. thanks again! We will not have any bulkheads coming through the middle of the room. Changing to have a lowered ceiling would cost us and we just dont have the money so we are happy with this result. This means when the kitchen guys come in the 400mm bulkhead will already be in place over our over head cupboards, so they will then do their bulkhead to fill in between top of the cupboards to meet flush with this bulkhead, if that makes sense. Anyway, all getting fixed up and no charges for us so really happy with that and getting our high ceilings back.
