Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 20, 2012 3:35 pm We are in the tender stage at the moment and have been told from our builder (still deciding) that the only choice for us for hot water is electric boosted solar. We don't have gas so the standard inclusions are not an option and apparently an off peak electric hot water won't allow us to pass Basix. I guess full solar is a possible option but they suggest electric boosted solar. a) What do other people do who build a new house and don't have access to town gas? b) We're in Metro Sydney - if we spend the $3500 for the system ... can we then claim a rebate? Our builder never told us this until we happen to ask what options we have because we have no gas in our area. Not sure what would have happened had we just signed the tender and not asked ... I'm guess we would have got a big surprise ! Thanks Re: Hot water Q for Basix 3Oct 22, 2012 7:16 am Hi Magical, This happened to us post tender signing and we also had to upgrade our system for Basix (also in Sydney metro), I think it was going to be another $2100 or close to it for the Solar system (also no gas in our estate) but we got upgraded at no additional cost as we didn't feel this was our fault and had signed under the prviso that the tender included everything we required for Basix. They kindly agreed and passed it through without the cost. This has gone up now so we have to the two panels on our roof. That is one thng Kurmond have been awesome at - being very fair on what we have to pay extra for and what we didn't. Who are you looking at building with? I haven't looked for a while so if you find something let me know, but I remember that all rebates were for existing homes or home/land packages only. We got nothing - even the water tank rebate - nothing.. as we were building on our own land and not doing a home/land package. Not fair! The other option for you are gas bottles, which is all we can do too, but we have decided not to at this point and just made all appliances electric. you can get them installed underground at the front of your house and they get topped up easily then. depending how much you run off them will determin how long they last before running out so just check in to that as to whether it's worth it as an ongoing cost. The other option is if you're happy with the builder on everything else then ask them to include the water system at no charge if you proceed with them. Not to assume your tender cost, but it's probably about 1 - 1.5% of the build. they'll cover it - it doesnt hurt to ask. Good luck!
