Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 19, 2012 12:26 pm Ok. In our original inclusions we had stacked stone to the portico of our facade, however this is one of the things we had to take out and pay for ourselves (valuation was low). I've since decided I don't want stacked stone any more, while I do love the way it looks now I feel it may become one of those features that will date within the next few years (if it hasn't started to already?), so I'm looking for ideas for alternatives. At the moment, we just have the to portico posts being painted a different colour to the rest of the house, which will be Resene Stack. The portico will be painted a whitish kind of colour (to match our white pearl window frames), just because I felt it needed to be different from the rest of the house. I do have a simulated photo of our facade on page two of my thread - I can't post it for some reason at the moment. Any ideas on something different we could do on these posts? Will have to be done post handover. But it was basically a normal rendered portico but the two "columns" had recesses in them, and flower pots were sitting in them, and down lights fitted from the top of the recesses. It looked amazing! Sorry I can't show you more detailed what I mean. On the right house, there's nothing wrong with just having a section around a pier painted a different colour. Frankly, if you ask 50 people what looks good and what looks tacky, you're probably going to get 20 different answers, and some will hate many of the other answers that others like. You need to do what you want for your home, not go on what others do or don't like and label as 'tacky'. Personally, I hate brown rendered façades - which is why mine will be Tinker, with a Western Myall pier. Building a Delta 21 at Craigieburn - http://homeofzero.blogspot.com.au/ Deposit: 26/02. They had their's put on after handover and their house was an identical copy to the display home which had the stone and they were able to compare their house side by side with no stone to the display with stone and in this particular situation it did look better with it. But it's different for every house and taste. I think them just painted a different colour will look great and if that dates it's just a quick paint over. Normally I would say don't worry about stuff dating and go with what you like but I know you have said you want to resell in a few years, maybe keep that in mind when deciding. We are having a tiny bit of rock cladding to our front portico posts and we are finding a few houses in our area doing the same, it's not stacked stone but more a natural rock look. It suits our craftsman style look we are going for. Re: Alternatives to stacked stone for facade? 6Oct 19, 2012 2:39 pm Ok, I've dodgied up a copy of our elevation in Paint to try and give everyone an idea. Obviously these colours aren't to life but you get what I mean! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It is all rendered and there is some cladding stuff above the portico which we've got in pearly white too. Tash, I definitely get where you are going with yours and it suits your house to a tee, looks so classic. But ours is just a normal, same-as-every-other-on-the-block lol so I don't know if that kind would mesh! Maybe we just stick with what we've got for now and wait until we find something? 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: Alternatives to stacked stone for facade? 8Oct 19, 2012 3:42 pm Tengals, I'm pretty sure I was thinking along the lines of some tiles... I need some ideas and pictures though I think! 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: Alternatives to stacked stone for facade? 9Oct 19, 2012 4:07 pm No, definetly don't use our stone for your portico, it has to be on the right house. I'm sure I saw a house on here recently with tiles on their posts but it was a two storey. Re: Alternatives to stacked stone for facade? 10Oct 19, 2012 5:03 pm need to open your options...regarding tiles.... i have seen some amazing tiles where from like 5mts away they dont even look like tiles...... grains, lines, texture, reflections, colours, stones, patterns, layers, the choice is endless Re: Alternatives to stacked stone for facade? 11Oct 19, 2012 6:55 pm Stacked Stone was popular in the 60's and I don't think it ever dated. I love the old retro homes with a stone facade or a stone fireplace. Must say I do like the Big Bronze tiles that are popular at the moment. Have you checked out studio M, they have similar frontage to yours that you can do mock ups to. You can add different colours to anywhere on the front and also rock and stacked stone as well. Not sure about tiles though. But worth a look. Re: Alternatives to stacked stone for facade? 14Oct 22, 2012 10:40 am Thanks for the ideas! I think tiling will be the way to go, I'm going to have a look around for some ideas and I will definitley try Studio M! Thanks lovely p.s; I like your new prof pic!
