Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 16, 2012 10:28 am So my fiance and I have FINALLY started building. We first approached our builders back in January so it has been a long time coming. Because my fiance has just become self employed, it was hard to get finances. But we finally got there in the end. We had originally hoped to have a house by the end of this year (because we get married in January 2013) but I think we will be lucky to move in by March 2013. We are building on 2.5 acres of land. The good thing about waiting so long before the start is that most of our choices have been made, and we had a lot of time to think about things and change our minds if we wanted to. Here are the plans. The house is 17.5 squares. Sound a lot like us - took a long time to get the building process underway (we have land now and will start building soon) so a lot of time to think about things... Good to see your house has started, keep the pictures coming - everyone loves pics! After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: Numero Uno - Our First Home 4Oct 16, 2012 3:03 pm Can't wait to see pics of your house progress. I will admit, I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I stress over the smallest things. When the bricks showed up I was really worried because they appeared discoloured, or had stripes running through them. Turns out that bricks have a good side and that it was hiding. Haha. We do have a tiny bit of a water view. Nothing to brag about though. I just love the space. Day 4 : Here a brick, there a brick... We weren't entirely impressed with the almost black bricks being used in the brick face. Not to mention the stripy bricks. Is this normal? The other cream/light coloured houses in the area don't have any blotches like this. The darker bricks did have a better looking side so I don't understand why they didn't have that side of the brick facing out? It will be interesting to see the progress tonight. We hate complaining and we really don't want to get the tradies off side. Should we take them a six pack tomorrow? Build thread : /viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60288 Re: First Home in Tas - Brickies are using dark bricks? 10Oct 18, 2012 12:33 pm We had mismatching colour bricks in our wall. They had completed about 2/3rds of the external brickwork and we complained. Ended up with a fight between our builder and the brick company but eventually the knocked it down and we had to choose a new brick. Ours was an expensive glazed feature brick. Turns out our building coy had 4 houses on the go with that particular brick, two were knocked down and two were rendered at the brick coy cost. Switch 830 in Meve Commenced 20/7/2011 Completed Early april 2012 Moved in 30/4/2012 Re: First Home in Tas - Brickies are using dark bricks? 11Oct 18, 2012 12:42 pm Do you have any photos? That sounds stressful. The colour is pretty much what we wanted. We thought it would be a tad creamier, (like this) but I still like it better than dark or red bricks. The colour we had originally chosen was from K&D Bricks, but they are closing down so we had to chose a colour from Austral instead. This was the closest colour we could find. Should look alright with the roof and windows (both will be in Colorbond Monument). Build thread : /viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60288 Re: First Home in Tas - Brickies are using dark bricks? 12Oct 18, 2012 3:41 pm Bricks usually have a "face" side, that's supposed to face out which is most likely why the brickies have laid them that way. From the looks of things it appears like they're burnt/glazed from when they were fired (hence why the colour matches the dark flecks in the other bricks). Happens to most bricks with a high sand content when closer to the heat. Asking the SS to have the brickies change the effected ones before it gets higher and not to use the rest was the right move. Just means more discards and maybe the cost of another pallet of bricks depending on how many are wasted. Also if the number of bricks with that level of discoloration is high, it may be worth hitting up the local Austral rep to take a look and see if they're willing to do anything. Re: First Home in Tas - Brickies are using dark bricks? 14Oct 18, 2012 4:39 pm Hi Nomie! Welcome to the fourms! Your journey sounds a little like ours, though you are definitely ahead of us. We are getting married soon, too - in about two weeks! We thought originally we would be in by our wedding but same as you, probably March-April next year. Do you have any pics of your colour selections? 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: First Home in Tas - Brickies are using dark bricks? 15Oct 18, 2012 5:07 pm I didn't think to take pictures of our colour choices when we made them. Oops. Sorry. Belial, thank you for the input. According to my partner who spoke to SS, the SS said that he would tell the brick layers to pull out the bad ones and not keep using them. I haven't had a look yet, but my partner has and he said that they have kept using a few (not as many) and have left the bad bunch there. Lucky I have planned to put a garden bed infront of the bad bunch. :O I'm not sure what is considered a high amount of discoloration. But here are the pictures I took of the palettes with the obvious dark bricks. Now just to get those black bricks taken out from yesterday. It's cool to get an idea for the actual size of the house. We've only lived in two bedroom units until now.
