In fact with wireless so good now can't see why you even them internally. Build Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=57639 Re: How many people have external ethernet points? 8Oct 15, 2012 11:05 am Wow..... I'm an IT nerd with plenty of Ethernet ports in my place. The only external one I could see happening would be for a TV in the alfresco but I didn't even cable that up Re: How many people have external ethernet points? 9Oct 15, 2012 11:42 am amgsl55 plucka Can't see why you need any externally. Hope the uses happen before you if ever re-locate. without being smart, coz I dont know alot in this area, but can you explain the 6 devices you will use in the garage and the 4 devices you will use outside that will all need ethernet? Re: How many people have external ethernet points? 10Oct 15, 2012 12:31 pm dvestate The only external one I could see happening would be for a TV in the alfresco but I didn't even cable that up I've got 5 'external' points. 3 are located in the alfresco area - 2 of them are to provision HDMI over ethernet if I decide to put a TV out there. The other one is for my IP weather station. The other 2 are located within the eaves - these are for my two IP security cameras. tengals wow 6 points in the garage.... I've got 4 in the garage - and although 6 would be excessive for me, I can see the potential. Once again I've provisioned 2 for HDMI over ethernet, 1 for general network access and the other will be connected to my solar inverter so that I can monitor output. 36 ports in all - which is good because I only had a 36 port switch. Was able to go a little crazy - my father in law is a licenced cabler so we were able to get in over a 2 day period an do all the runs. The hard/time consuming part will be the terminating and the testing though.. Yes wireless technology is getting better - but you can't beat the speed, consistency and reliability of a hard wired network - especially when you are dealing with large amounts of data. Re: How many people have external ethernet points? 11Oct 15, 2012 12:42 pm If I could have done my own cabling I would have much more than I do currently, just did not want to pay for it..... External's should be easy to run for my Alfresco later, same with any eave requirement. My garage will have 3-4 devices there but I'll be running direct to my cabinet Re: How many people have external ethernet points? 12Oct 15, 2012 12:52 pm Perhaps a cheaper way to do it if you're really going to need ports in alfresco areas would be to have a single point installed to a particular point, then have that running a PoE switch to points in that local area. That said, if you see yourself doing crazy things like HoE in an alfresco area, well, your imagination escapes my own. For most of my house, we're just running a single point to each room, with a switch or PoE switch at each point. Re: How many people have external ethernet points? 15Oct 15, 2012 3:28 pm Your stuffed if you knocked a hole in the wall for a wall plate. They can be run later but can be difficult with placement to the floor 2 Re: How many people have external ethernet points? 16Oct 16, 2012 2:11 am Cool thanks guys for the answers! I dont know if someone can help but we are stuck on a point now. We want to have hdmi provisions for future proofing. But can we run hdmi cable through plastic provisions? I am concerned maybe the heads wont be ahle to run through corners. Are there any other solutions? Thanks! Re: How many people have external ethernet points? 17Oct 16, 2012 11:12 am tengals So what happens if the point down the track is not in the right location? just trying to learn..... the same thing that happens if your power points, TV aerial point, telephone etc are not in the right location Re: How many people have external ethernet points? 18Oct 16, 2012 11:21 am fair enough understand...... thats why I was asking, "future proofing" by putting 6 points in the garage, but not in the "future" enough to know what you are going to use all of them for, or even what exact locations you need then in in the "future" seems like it almost defeats the purpose of future proofing. I can see the point, but can also see how going over board and putting points in random spots without planned applications or locations, kind of defeats the purpose..... Maybe im just missing the point. Im just learning. Re: How many people have external ethernet points? 19Oct 16, 2012 12:08 pm tengals I can see the point, but can also see how going over board and putting points in random spots without planned applications or locations, kind of defeats the purpose..... Boy Scout motto - Be prepared. Much much cheaper to provision for them now, than have to retro-fit in the future. Yes you may not end up using it or it may be slightly in the wrong location - but at least they are there and can be easily overcome. A bit like having insurance - you may not ever use it, but its there in the event that you need it. Re: How many people have external ethernet points? 20Oct 16, 2012 12:26 pm true. do you need to get an electrician back out to move them? or is it something you can legally do yourself? and what if the cable run is not long enough to relocate? can you add on an extra few metres? thanks in advance.... Okay sorry silly me, my wife has solves the mystery for me. It’s because the labels on the ports are all wrongly positioned by the builder hence it confuses me. 2 1377 If you're referring to Eufy homebase, then just put a switch between a datapoint and put the homebase elsewhere near another device in your home unless you want teh… 9 13845 I would never build with Fowler homes.
