Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 11, 2012 5:48 pm What do you do with the leftover bricks when your brickwork is finished? Are you allowed to keep these bricks or do brickies claim them? Just thinking about letter box later down the road... How many bricks would you need to make one? Would I need to buy bricks later or can I keep some of the ones that's been left? Is there a preference in bricks: internal wall red brick or face bricks? (Mail box will be rendered). Leftover bricks 2Oct 11, 2012 6:29 pm Usually if you ask you SS you can keep them, but you will have to move them to the back corner of your block, and pretty quick or they will get cleaned up and taken away Building again . . with Redink Pre-start 04/12 Keys - 03/13 Finishing off. . . [unless of course you havent got the risers and hobs. Re: Leftover bricks 4Oct 11, 2012 7:21 pm Builders would rather you kept any left over bricks as otherwise it costs them to have them carted away. As others have said, you'll have to move them aside since builders will want to leave the site clean. Does it make difference if the bricks are internal (red ones) or face bricks? Re: Leftover bricks 8Oct 12, 2012 6:14 pm Bricks are 230x110x76 mm. Mortar joins are 10 mm. From this you can work out the number required. Since the letter box is rendered, either face or common bricks will work, whichever you have left over. if buying more, get common bricks since they are cheaper. Where would you get the nice metal letter box from? They were more than happy to do that, however I think the neighbours thought it looked a little suss on the day we went to pick them up! Re: Leftover bricks 11Oct 15, 2012 9:49 am That mailbox in the pic above is stupidly low, would expect Aus Post to just throw your letters on top. As for spare bricks my last house was lucky enough to have an entire pallet of pavers left over from the driveway, they were the wrong ones ordered or something, about 700 in total- used them all to make garden edging Build Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=57639 Re: Leftover bricks 12Oct 15, 2012 10:14 am We had a couple of pallets leftover, and our site supervisor called to ask if we wanted to keep any. We said we would like to keep one pallet, thinking about a letterbox, but have since decided to buy a letterbox and now have to get rid of a pallet of bricks ourselves Re: Leftover bricks 13Oct 15, 2012 12:51 pm monkeypantz We had a couple of pallets leftover, and our site supervisor called to ask if we wanted to keep any. You would be surprised how many people go looking for bricks. Re: Leftover bricks 14Oct 15, 2012 12:53 pm Banksy1460 @AubinGroveFan I know its only an image, but that looks super low? Australia post have a minimum height requirement... If its lower they wont deliver your mail I was going to say the same ^^^. Height minimum is apparently 1m from ground to mail slot. Might be a good idea to check AusPost website. Re: Leftover bricks 16Oct 15, 2012 9:21 pm We were told we could keep our leftover bricks, and to move them into the back bedrooms for the remainder of the construction so they could then clear the front yard area. Myself, my partner and my brother moved and stacked them up neatly so tradies could still work around them comfortably. A couple weeks before handover was due, we visited the house only to find the bricks gone. Annoying, would rather have just been told upfront we couldn't have them! That's a fantastic result! Happy you got it sorted out. cheers Simeon 6 8640 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair to do it properly you need to dig out the garden and waterproof the outside of the wall.
