WHAT ARE EAVES? 2Apr 02, 2008 9:12 pm I don't have a pic - but it's not a stupid question I asked the same thing a while back
There are when the roof line extends beyond the brickwork to create shade, help when it rains etc I hope thats a good explanation - a picture will work better Re: this might seem stupid, but... WHAT ARE EAVES? 3Apr 02, 2008 9:18 pm This house has eaves:

WHAT ARE EAVES? 4Apr 02, 2008 10:11 pm It's funny that you ask this. I assumed it was common knowledge, but my wife recently asked the same question!
Eaves are simply where the roof extends beyond the walls of the house, creating an overhang. Or as my wife explained back to me, "like a ceiling but outside". Alan and Thuy in Melbourne Building a second time! Re: this might seem stupid, but... WHAT ARE EAVES? 5Apr 02, 2008 10:46 pm 100% everyone.

What I am about to say is NOT some tree-huggin, Hippie cr@p. Feral Greenies are the scourge of society as far as I'm concerned. Ummm, eaves used to be standard fitment on detached houses for over 100 years, didn't they? Builders only started making them optional in an attempt to reduce construction costs about 10 years ago. I still can't find where it's written that houses no longer had to be built to suit Australian conditions since then though. They DO throw shade on your windows in summer, they DO stop you getting wet if you need to walk around your house when it rains, and they DO allow you to leave your windows open when it's raining . Obviously they're not needed though as long as you have an air conditioner the size of a Mack truck with an appetite to match. IMHO anyone not having eaves on their house should show some consistency by never wearing a hat outside in the sun. Geoff - Decophile. Re: this might seem stupid, but... WHAT ARE EAVES? 15Apr 05, 2008 10:01 pm yep, agree with you Eager, eaves are not a new-fangled greenie invention but standard practice on houses in our Australian climate until very recently and for good reason.
Where I live it is hot and dry, sun is harsh,I do not wish to make my electricity bills any higher than neccesary, I would not even consider doing a house without eaves (in our case a bullnose verandah too) and in fact our builder who builds mainly in country SA, does eaves as standard and did not even offer the possibility of not having them. Re: this might seem stupid, but... WHAT ARE EAVES? 16Apr 06, 2008 7:24 am Yes, I thought there was a bit of that in Matt's post. The question I ask is, 'Why?' Geoff - Decophile. It all stemmed from friendly banter about a year ago with past and present members and became a forum in-joke (like the lime green colour designs) that has just kinda carried on. Some members are eave-lovers I am an eave-hater. It helps to stir the pot and get people thinking about the subject Re: this might seem stupid, but... I'll still leave it up to you to convince me why it's such a bad idea to have eaves cast shade on the house though! Geoff - Decophile. They using concrete or timber sleepers?
