Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 02, 2008 8:40 am Our rental requires that we give 28 days notice of vacating (I think this is standard). We have paid our rent til the 27th April, and were hoping this would be the last month of rent we would be paying (it's going to eat into the money for fencing and concrete) but it doesn't seem that way, as each day from now that we wait to give notice will be another day of rent to pay...
I rang our CSR yesterday to try to pin down a date (or the likelyhood) of completion, but was told that they normally advise that customers give notice when the "surveyor" goes through (I'm assuming this is an inspector ), as this then gives 4 weeks to fix any issues and you don't want to be cutting it fine with having to move out before the house is ready. I was then told that our fittings and fixtures would be finished this week, should have certificate of occupancy end of next week, and the inspections would start the week after. Based on this we still have 6 weeks before handover? We don't want to be paying more than we have to in rent, but then we don't want to give notice too early either. What have others found at this stage? How long did it take to handover? Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: When did you give notice? 2Apr 02, 2008 1:34 pm Ray, there was a similar sort of question raised by Mikita recently regarding renting and handover....my suggestion is try and work out an additional fortnightly or weekly agreement if possible??
Heres the link to that thread: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=5805 Not long now hey....you must be so excited!!!! Re: When did you give notice? 3Apr 02, 2008 8:04 pm Ray,
We will also decide on that in the near future. Since you will be doing some more stuff after handover, might as well give at least a fortnight allowance. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: When did you give notice? 4Apr 02, 2008 9:53 pm Ray you seem to be in the same boat as me. Yes you have to give 28 days notice to vacate. Ive given my real estate agent 5 weeks notice April 27th is when ive told them i will be out by,, but will move before then and allow that extra time to go back and clean .I had to break my lease and will be up for some costs advertising ect till they find someone to take over. So if you give plenty of notice they should find someone as rental properties are scarce. And i know what you mean by not wanting to pay any more money i dont wont my house funds eaten into either
As for how long it takes for handover in my situation ive just had prehandover inspection this week and handover is next week providing all issues are fixed. Re: When did you give notice? 6Apr 02, 2008 10:13 pm Yikes, our gyprock was about 6 weeks AGO!
I just can't fathom that with very little still to do, they are implying that it will still take another 6 weeks? We have the tiles done (floor and wall), the doors are on, all painting is done. We are waiting on the electrical fitoff, shower screens and glass splashback, and wardrobe fittings and doors... I think that's it. Sure there are little things they need to fix, but from the sounds of other posts the builders wouldn't delay handover for minor things anyway. Is it too much to ask that we know WHEN we will move?? Seriously, we have had that much hold up along the way - if we weren't waiting for council, bricks, Christmas, paint, etc. We would have been finished almost 2 months ago... just sucks paying mortgage and rent and trying to have money for all the little things that still need to be finished. Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: When did you give notice? 7Apr 03, 2008 5:03 am Hi Ray,
we are in a difficult position at the moment so I can really relate to this topic. Our current house has settlement on the 20th May, when we agreed to this back in December we had a slab and the frame was starting so it seemed 5 months was heaps of time. As you said its all the delays like christmas, easter, wet days etc that have eaten into the time and also the weeks where no work gets done at all. Its so frustrating! Our builder won't even talk to us about an estimated finish date but we think it will definetly be later than we planned for. So our problem is what to do - we will have to try to negotiate renting our current home for an extra month or moving somewhere else for a little while. But how to negotiate that when we have no idea when our new house will be ready. If only builders would communicate more with their clients it would make everything easier! No the fireplace doesn’t work. It’s been enclosed. I’m not sure what was removed, as it was done quite some time ago - well before what I can see with photos online… 2 11569 Looking to start the journey of becoming an owner builder in SA.
